Eritreans currently imprisoned for the “crime” of peacefully exercising their religion should be released - U.S. Embassy

Minister Yemane is correct that there are a number of churches and mosques — and even a historical synagogue — in Asmara. But only four religious groups are “recognized” by the government. Evangelicals and other Christian minority groups can’t legally worship in the churches Minister Yemane mentions. Nor can Shia or Sufi Muslims pray in the mosques. Even worse, Eritreans who worship outside the four legal religions are arrested, sometimes tortured, and imprisoned.
Freedom of religion is a fundamental human right. The United States urges the Eritrean government to allow ALL religious groups to register so that ALL Eritreans may worship freely. Eritreans currently imprisoned for the “crime” of peacefully exercising their religion should be released. “Recognized” religious groups should be allowed to operate without government interference.
U.S. Embassy Asmara has repeatedly praised the religious pluralism in Eritrea. We have also repeatedly urged the government to revise its policies so that there is religious freedom in Eritrea.
