Unless we learn from history, we are destined to repeat it. The celebration of Eritrea's independence in Addis Ababa caught my attention and it's made me think about one thing, how much suffering did these people endure in order to achieve their freedom? In 1952, Eritrea was given a constitution that included a democratically elected assembly and the key institutions of civil society, but, federated under the Ethiopian crown. however, I don't think the old king understood the notion of the federation. Eritrea's administration was deprived of power and undermined. as a result, on September 1, 1961, in Barka, the first shots were fired. Thus began the most brutal and bloody conflict of all time.

Now, we are still trying to figure out the importance of self-rule. You should never put your future in the hands of anyone or any group. Although we are under a federal system, it is not sufficient or well designed to serve our people. we should never make another mistake as the old man did. Other regions should be allowed to rule themselves peacefully. Those who are subject to the rule of someone else include children, slaves, and victims. our future lies in our hands once again. All of us have our own story to tell, our own hardships. None of us can live the lives of others! again happy Eritrean Indpeiendce day!
