Tadesse Abraham, 39, created a sensation by breaking the Swiss marathon record in Zurich on Sunday at 2h06’38. Genevan won the race, pushing the score two seconds ahead in Seoul in 2016.
Tadesse Abraham signed a tactical and physical little masterpiece that works within the “negative division”: the second division is (significantly) faster than the first. He broke the record by snatching the first 21.1 kilometers in 1h03’50 and the next two kilometers in 1h02’47.
Still very comfortable in this Zurich land that greeted him on his arrival from Eritrea, LC Uster’s Genevan slowly let go of the many African rivals who accompanied him to the 30km. He finished the race ahead of Oliver Irabaruta of Burundi (2h07’13), third place went to Francis Cheruiyot of Kenya (2h09’57). Of course he won the title of Swiss champion awarded during this event.
It is worth noting again the encouraging 6th place of Geneva’s Julien Lyon (2h16’40), silver medalist at the Swiss Championship, who made a comeback after several difficult seasons.
