It is funny how you present it like something for the greater god. This is bad news especially in a very corrupted country like Ethiopia. Any say welcome to diabetes, heart problems, breast cancer and the rest of what the west is killing. Do you know why i respect Japanese? They preserve their culture while advancing in technological world. We Ethiopians have a great and health diet, why Fuk with it? oh i get it, Ethiopia is developing and advancing, right? As long as Abiy is in power, Ethiopia will be importing all the Ruinous of the west. He is a Juneky of the west. typical African Slave.
Zemen, you have raised one reasonable objection against the catering company but in my view culture is only one parameter when we are dealing with economy and what companies should do or not. The other aspects you didn't consider are:ZEMEN wrote: ↑10 Mar 2022, 12:59It is funny how you present it like something for the greater god. Temari, i will get back to you point by point to your replay, however what I wanted to estimate is this... In your opinion what will be the unemployment rate or ration in Ethiopia? Some one guessed 80% and i was horrified to believe that, would you share that estimation?temari wrote: ↑11 Mar 2022, 10:55Zemen, you have raised one reasonable objection against the catering company but in my view culture is only one parameter when we are dealing with economy and what companies should do or not. - The catering company was mainly supplying international airlines like Lufthansa, Qatar Airways etc. So naturally it is specialized in European cuisine and not in enjera and shiro. Covid19 pandemic has forced the company to supply the local market but originally the local market was not its target.
- Ethiopia has a huge problem of unemployment. Every year hundreds of thousands of graduates do not find jobs. So we are not in a position to measure the value of a company based on only one parameter such as culture. Unemployment is a huge factor far more important than preserving culture.
- Companies pay taxes and are a source of revenues. Our government needs every penny from the companies so that is also another factor.
And finally, when Japan was developing there was no internet, social media and satellite TVs. It had also not a huge diaspora community that brings western culture back to the country. The exposure to the western culture was nonexistent at that time. You can't compare that to the current intertwined world. Today, you will find Christmas trees and decoration in many Muslim countries even though Christmas is originally a christian religious holiday. What I am saying is that the world has changed and cultural influences are very hard to resist but still I agree we should do whatever we can to preserve what is good in our culture like our delicious food.
Zemen, I don't have the real numbers but I remember hearing from 3% to 19% based on different years. I have never heard such a high figure like 80% and I don't think that is accurate. World bank for example puts the figure at 3.2% for 2020ZEMEN wrote: ↑11 Mar 2022, 15:29Temari, i will get back to you point by point to your replay, however what I wanted to estimate is this... Temari, the number you provided seems to misleading and deceptive. For instance, France has 7+% unemployment rate and it is absurd to think Ethiopians are more employed than France. I do believe South Africans are more employed than Ethiopians and South Africa's unemployment is, According to Bloomberg is "44.4% from 43.2% in the first quarter. While the unemployment rate is now the highest of the countries tracked by""" Bloomberg. So there is no way the number you provided is accurate. I know that what you found but commonsense says, wrong!!!!temari wrote: ↑11 Mar 2022, 16:08Zemen, I don't have the real numbers but I remember hearing from 3% to 19% based on different years. But it is clear that many graduates struggle to get jobs. That is for sure. The good thing is that many try their luck by starting their own businesses using different loans such as አነስተኛና ጥቃቅን and other government supported programs. Still the struggle is real.
If you think that could be anywhere near an accurate figure, then certainly you don't understand the meaning of unemployment. I can say that much. But you don't have to expose your ignorance on such a basic concept on a public forum and still dare to consider yourself fit for a rational discussion. Just my little tip for you while you are at it.
You sound a typical white trash that analyses Africa. You pretend like there is real economic performance that carry the nation andDefendTheTruth wrote: ↑11 Mar 2022, 16:51If you think that could be anywhere near an accurate figure, then certainly you don't understand the meaning of unemployment. If by some miracle it was possible that 20% of the population, assuming that all the population is in the work-force (working age group), can sustain the remaining 80% then those employed citizens must be super rich, who can sustain on average 4 additional citizens of the nation.
But in my little understanding of the concept not 100% of the population is in a working age and divided into employed/unemployed binary.
Ethiopia could have around 40% of its citizens under the age of 15 or not actively looking for job (in school, studying, for exa.) so, who are by their very nature not considered unemployed, something over 10-15% at least could be also in the older age gap (above 65 or 70 years), who are no more in the working age and as such would't be considered unemployed. But we have many elderly people working in the countryside of Ethiopia, who shouldn't be considered unemployed, anyhow.
The maxim of the day is political expediency, rest is ignored. I understand that much.
Zemen, I don't think Ethiopia has higher unemployment rate than South Africa. The reason is, in Ethiopia over 70% the population is still dependent on agriculture where you don't have the normal unemployment problem. The unemployment in Ethiopia is mostly reflected in the cities and among graduates. That is I think the reason why we have a lower unemployment rate than more industrialized countries. There is no way Ethiopia can sustain an unemployment rate of 80%. That is impossible. If 80% (that is 90 million) from 120 million are unemployed in a country where there is no welfare system then you can imagine what could happen.ZEMEN wrote: ↑11 Mar 2022, 16:24Temari, the number you provided seems to misleading and deceptive. Temari; you got a point, sir!!! i was gaging through the cities and i completely failed to see and understand 80% of the population lives through agriculture, therefore 80% is employed. well done my friend, you are right, thank you for knocking some sense to my thinking thank you, you make sense.temari wrote: ↑11 Mar 2022, 17:59Zemen, I don't think Ethiopia has higher unemployment rate than South Africa.
