Given the way world politics is turning these days, Eritrea is likely to provide naval and military bases sooner than expected to American rivals, such as the Russian Federation and the Chinese People's Army on its Red Sea ports and islands.
As things appear, the Russians will have an army base around Massawa close to the Dahlak Islands while China will have its base close in Assab port, not far from Harena. Not only will Eritrea get "rental money", free tech transfer and advanced armaments for its naval and air-force personnel and colleges but also a defense umbrella of the two super powers with veto powers at world stages.
Recently the Chinese foreign minister and the Russian deputy foreign minister were seen visiting Asmara and Massawa respectively.
This will further enrage the Americans who will be stuck in little space in Djibouti, sharing cafes and washrooms with the French, Arabs, Japs, camel herders and salt miners.

Eritrea 's statement at the conclusion of the 11th Emergency Special Session of the General Assembly
Eritrea firmly believes that respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity & political independence, as enshrined in the United Nations Charter…
Eritrea’s position is against internationalizing conflicts, incessant rhetoric, and impositions of unilateral sanctions, which regrettably further polarize international relations and escalate the situation with enormous implications for civilians.
The situation between Russia & Ukraine raises serious concern with political, economic & security ramifications for Europe & the rest of the world. It requires immediate resolution by giving more chances to diplomacy.
Eritrea opposes all forms of unilateral sanctions, as illegal & counterproductive. Eritrea, as a country that has been subjected to such measures by the West for 2 decades, including new sets of unilateral measures, understands sanctions do not resolve problems of peace & security.
It will be remiss, if I don't address disturbing reports that African citizens living in Ukraine are facing difficulties while crossing the borders. We call on all countries to facilitate safe passages to people fleeing for safety, regardless of their racial identity.
