US Launches Airstrike Against Al-Shabaab In Somalia

The US launched an airstrike against al-Shabaab in Somalia on Tuesday, US Africa Command (AFRICOM) said on Wednesday. It marks the first US bombing of Somalia reported by AFRICOM in 2022. https://www.africom.mil/pressrelease/34 ... of-somalia

AFRICOM said it conducted the strike in a remote location near Duduble, Somalia, in support of the US-backed government. The Somali military said its special forces, known as the Danab, killed 60 al-Shabaab fighters on Tuesday in operations https://www.africom.mil/pressrelease/34 ... of-somalia in several areas in the Hiran region, including in Duduble.

AFRICOM said its “initial assessment” found no civilian casualties in its airstrike, but as recent reporting has shown, https://www.nytimes.com/spotlight/the-c ... on-reports the Pentagon is notorious for undercounting civilian casualties. When it comes to Somalia, whenever journalists make it to the scene of a US airstrike, they usually find that civilians were killed. https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/ ... r-strikes/

The last US airstrike in Somalia that was reported by AFRICOM was conducted on August 24th, 2021. AFRICOM now declares almost all of its strikes in Somalia, but the CIA also conducts drone strikes and raids in the country in secret, so it’s tough to know how active the US is in the war against al-Shabaab.

AFRICOM cited the 2001 authorization for the use of military force (AUMF) that was passed after the September 11th attacks as the justification for Tuesday’s strike. Al-Shabaab didn’t exist at the time, but after years of fighting the US and its proxies, https://news.antiwar.com/2021/04/22/afr ... ithdrawal/ the group declared loyalty to al-Qaeda in 2012, giving Washington the excuse it needs to invoke the 2001 AUMF.

Is Mr. Obama saying "you are either with us or against us" in his statement, where he called on all people of the world?

Russia was supporting us, when your camp was calling endless sessions of the UNSC on internal matters of Ethiopia to impose sanctions and deblitate the poor nation further. I didn't come across if Ukraine supported Ethiopia back then, I could be wrong, so how are we supposed to heed to your call here, Sir, please?

Press Statement: Raising Concerns Over Those Undermining Somalia's Territorial Integrity

Feb 22, 2022

A recent state visit to Addis Ababa accorded to a delegation led by a group of Somali secessionists from Hargeisa has triggered serious concerns about infringement of Somalia's sovereignty. We must therefore break the silence on the matter.

After carefully observing and studying events over the last several weeks, we have confirmed that what appears to be rogue elements within the Ethiopian government, effectively holdovers of the deposed and universally despised Tigrayan People's Liberation Front (TPLF), are using their offices to engage in dangerous clannist politics that transcend international borders and threaten the peace and cooperation between the sisterly nations of the Horn of Africa.

At this critical juncture when the broad masses of the Horn are coming together in solidarity, the rogue elements within the Ethiopian government are working to spoil this push towards unity for their own narrow, exploitative sectarian ends (i.e. clannism). More specifically, these rogue elements provoked the following two divisive actions:

The official state reception in Addis Ababa for Hargeisa-based secessionist Somalis who claimed to represent an
independent state;
and

The categorization by state-owned Ethiopian Airlines on its destination map of an independent, Hargeisa-centered secessionist state inside the borders of the Somali state.

These two dangerous acts directly undermine Somalia's territorial integrity, especially at a time when the Somali government and people are working hard to reconstitute their nation and elect their next leadership. Unilateral secession of entire subnational regions on the basis of tribe or clan run counter to the mission and spirit of the #NoMore movement, which seeks to bring together all African and exploited peoples to end their collective exploitation with the greater goal of promoting collective peace, prosperity and progress.

The #NoMore movement stands firmly with the Somali people against all remaining TPLF remnants and rogue elements in the Ethiopian government that seek to sabotage Somali sovereignty and development; that seek to interrupt the growing solidarity across the Horn of Africa and thus expose the fragmented peoples to outside exploitation.

As such, we urge the Ethiopian government to retract these counterproductive and divisive policies towards Somalia and prosecute those who subtly undermine the current regional order. We stand behind the governments of Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea as they work to unite the Horn and free the peoples of the region from the shackles of imperialism and foreign exploitation.

Screw Somalia they cant even fend off alshabab. Im sick and tired of Eritrea being Pan HOA. Eritrea has enough problems on its own. We dont need to intervene in Somalia BTW the Somaliland have every right to have a referendum and suceed from Somalia just like Eritrea succeeded from Ethiopia. Opposing Somalilands Self Determination is opposing Eritreas Self Determination using logic.

Hey, knucklehead, Eritrea, the victim, never seceded from Ethiopia, the violator of international norms. Eritrea regained its independence that was snatched away by your Ethiopia.

Temt - Did you know this? If the war didn't take place in 1998, Bereket would've stayed in his Addis Ababa home. What does that tell you?

https://blogs.voanews.com/music-time-in ... engisteab/
After spending a few years in Asmara (which was part of Ethiopia at the time), Bereket moved to Addis Abeba in 1961. And it was in Addis that Bereket made his stage debut, as a member of the Haile Selassie Theater Orchestra; during the previous year he spent in Asmara he never performed outside of his circle of friends. Bereket stayed with the Haile Selassie Theater Orchestra for a little over a decade, performing with the group throughout Ethiopia, in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Senegal (at the 1966 Festival mondial des Arts Nègres), and in Mexico (at the 1968 Summer Olympics). During these years he also made his first recordings, nine singles for the Philips label (I don’t know the exact dates and have not been able to find any of these singles).

In 1973, the year before Haile Selassie was overthrown, Bereket left the Haile Selassie Theater Orchestra and started his own group, which he called ‘Megaleh Guayla’ (which can be translated as the ‘echo of the dance’). Just a year later, however, Bereket decided to leave the concert halls and nightclubs of Addis for the mountains of Eritrea, and in 1974, he joined the Eritrean Liberation Front (ELF) and the fight for Eritrean independence. As did all members of the ELF, Bereket underwent military training, and participated in the Eritrean liberation struggle both on the battlefield with his rifle, and in the military camps with his revolutionary songs; music played a crucial role in maintaining the morale and determination of those fighting for Eritrean independence.

In 1980, he made his North American debut, bringing his love of Eritrea and revolutionary songs to the Eritrean Diaspora. When full independence came to Eritrea in 1993, Bereket was invited to tour the country, performing in Massawa, Keren, and Asmara. With the war finally over, he returned to Addis Abeba and re-opened the music shop that Bereket and his wife had run before he joined the liberation struggle twenty years earlier.

When war broke out again between Eritrea and Ethiopia, in 1998, Bereket left Addis Abeba and settled in Asmara, where he still lives. Over the last eleven years he has continued to compose and record new songs, releasing at least a cassette a year. He is currently working on a ten song CD that will feature his arrangements of traditional songs. When not on tour, Bereket looks after his business, the ‘B. M. Music House’ located on Babylon square in downtown Asmara.
