....according to the West!

As a child, Nagy was forced to flee from Hungary and arrived in Washington DC in 1957.

Brilliant!
🧵 NATO hypocrisy:
The sameUS military with 750 bases in 80 counties around the world; including tens of thousands of troops in Germany, Japan, and South Korea – doesn’t want Russia’s military to construct any bases in the 2 republics on its border it just recognized.
The sameUK that is occupying 6 counties in Ireland, the ‘Falkland Islands’ (Islas Malvinas), and Gibraltar – cares about “sovereignty” and doesn’t want Russia to occupy eastern Ukraine.
The sameGermany that blitzkrieg invaded Russia in WWII and led to 25 million Soviet deaths – now doesn’t understand why Russia would want a buffer state to prevent it from happening again.
The sameTurkey that seized northern Cyprus, terrorizes Afrin, bombs Iraqi Kurdistan, sent ISIS mercenaries to Artsakh, props up warlords in Libya, and threatens the Greek Islands – is now concerned about “peace” and Ukraine’s “territorial integrity”.
Oh, I'm not finished ...
The same US that is lootingPuerto Rico as a colony for tax-dodging crypto bros and turning indigenous Hawaii into a playground for tech billionaires – doesn’t want Moscow to exploit Donbas mines, factories, and steel plants.
The same US that has military forces in Okinawa to containChina and recognizes the breakaway ‘Republic of China’ (ROC) aka Taiwan – doesn’t want Russian forces in Luhansk to contain NATO expansion and to recognize the breakaway ‘Donetsk People's Republic’ (DPR).
And the same US foreign policy that historically has a ‘Monroe Doctrine', declaring all of Latin America and the Caribbean as their own Banana Republic backyard, enforced by dictators (Somoza, Batista, Pinochet, Stroessner Trujillo, Duvalier, etc) is now worried that Putin viewsUkraine as the ancestral Slavic homeland of Russia and might install a pro-Moscow puppet in Kiev.
This isn’t even a defense of Russia’s actions, but a little consistency would be nice. Or if NATO wants to prevent eye rolling by those of us who know history, just admit it is not about lofty principles, but pure geopolitical power.
One side’s kleptocrats versus another’s oligarchs, with most people ending up worse regardless of the outcome.
Indeed!
