ጦርነቱ የጀመረው በምዕራባዊው ቆላማ አካባቢ በከርከበት በኩል ነበር፤ ከፍተኛ የሰው ኃይል የተሰጠው ግዙፉ ሰራዊትና ትልቅ መወዕለ-ኢኮኖሚ የፈሰሰበት ጦርነት ተጀመረ፤ ገዳም ግን አልነበረም፤ ጦርነቱን የመሩት ኮለኔል ውብሸት ማሞ ነበሩ፤ የተሰጣቸው መረጃ እና መሬት ላይ የጠበቃቸው ጦርነት የተራራቀ ነበር፤ ውጤቱም ሽንፈት ሆነና ሪፖርታቸውን ለበላይ አለቆቻቸው ላኩ፤

Carrying out the executions of Derg army commanders in front of their troops must have been very traumatizing and demoralizing for the troops, but at least the troops had the option to surrender when faced with defeat.

The TPLF terrorist regime however changed all that by having its Tigray commanders training their guns on the backs of the Ethiopian troops to force them walk over mine fields and into well fortified Eritrean trenches, in what is known as a human wave military tactic that ensures no Ethiopian soldier walks out of the battlefield alive. Brutal!

Losing ~1400 soldiers dead and wounded in just one place 40 years ago is like losing 20,000 soldiers now. The loss must have been upsetting for the top brass Ethiopian military officers.

What these leaders did not understood was the Derg government was highly infiltrated by so many elements and the military secrets always leaks giving advantage to the rebels. Not only that western intelligence had always supported rebels because they hate mengistu to their bone.

Hence the colonel who was executed has no chance of delivering the needed victory even if he had the well experienced Ethiopian bridgaddes. The enemy always get information before hand, dugg well and prepare the needed trap to prevail

That is the weakest argument I have ever read. One truth that can not be denied is that the Degue was supported by the super power of that time - the USSR fully. Dergue had supplies of unlimmitted weaponry including tanks, trucks, Grad misiles, aircrafts and war ships. Everything was covered by the USSR. Even USSR personnel and generals were active on the field, advising fronts with their full satellite data. That was the only reason why Mengistu declared that he had the biggest army in Africa. Fact is fact. The argument of non existent western support and intelligence leaks is just feeble and it can only come from a bütthurt.
