Lalibela original name Roha/روحا meaning Soul or ነፍስ in Amharic! King Lalibela Gebremesekel who lived from 1162 to 1221 gave the town Roha in Bugna/Lasta the name Lalibela meaning Bela (Ate in Amharic) and Lali meaning Honey/Mar in Zagwegna/Hemregna this in Amharic is Maribela. the King ate Honey!

ላዕላይ-ቤላ is the wrong word and meaning! This assumption comes from non amharas and non zagwes who come from tigrAy gurage and outside our kilil the meaning “I Eat Above” is sinful in fact it would be called LaliyeBelaw! Instead of Laleybela! !! horus hororo

In fact the purpose of using Laley would be connected to the story of the Israelites that ate bread from above this would mean king lalibela ate ke belay dabo! Instead of eating local honey

There is no word Roha(ሮሃ) to mean nefs(ነፍስ) in Amharic. It is in Arabic ruh(ሩህ) means soul(ነፍስ) and it also has another meaning in Arabic for ruh, which is to say GO? eg. el ruh talaat( ነፍስ ወጣች) ruh hinak(Go there).

And in a southern semitic language of Harari they pronounce in the same sound ruh/ሩህ when they refer to soul (ነፍስ). But in Amharic Roha is another church or religious term.

It sounds like more Afan Oromo word, and I could be right since Agew belongs to the Cushitic linguistic group.

In Afaan Oromo Lali means look ተመልከት Bela means blind ዕውር, So Lali Bela means ዕውር ተመልከት

In Dire Dawa and Harar sometimes in Addis Ababa too, there were Amhara beggars standing early in the morning at your gate to beg, I don't know if I say it was a song but it was some kind of long speech in Amharic nonstop with a melody you hear from them. They were also known as Lalibela.

I don't know what you guys are trying to lecture us here otherwise.

The original name of lalibela is roha. Lalibelas name has nothing to do with gala or zomali! Just shut up u jealous agama freak. How come zomali gala cant understand 99% of agewugna? It is not cushitic language if it was you would understand it like amhara understand tigrinya in fact amhara understand agewugna more then outsiders
