"U.S. sanctions on the PFDJ are a consequence of Eritrea’s military intervention in northern Ethiopia" U.S. Embassy Asmara Eritrea

Inaccurate information is being disseminated about U.S. sanctions on the Eritrean military and the PFDJ.

U.S. sanctions on the PFDJ are a consequence of Eritrea’s military intervention in northern Ethiopia, and were carefully crafted to minimize any humanitarian impact on the Eritrean people. PFDJ-raised monies, including from front organizations like the Hidri Trust, fund Eritrean military operations in northern Ethiopia. To avoid hurting the people of Eritrea, U.S. sanctions specifically exempt agricultural commodities, medicine, and medical devices/replacement parts. Remittances are allowed. Current U.S. sanctions do not target the Eritrean government (except the military) or private businesses (such as the mining sector, which provides most of Eritrea’s national income).

Eritrean forces in northern Ethiopia have committed widespread and serious human rights violations and prevented humanitarian access to people in need of assistance. Eritrea should immediately and permanently withdraw its forces and support a negotiated solution to the conflict in northern Ethiopia. There is no military solution.
