GTNA TV ("African Al Jazeera") to be established in Addis Ababa
Africans attempting to tell their stories and having their own international media is a step in the right direction. Whether Africans can manage to finance such institution remains to be seen. After all the media needs to include many international journalists and editors of native English speakers etc. if it wants to become a global player. You can't achieve that with only local journalists.

The biggest setback for media freedom came in Ethiopia
Seventy-five African journalists imprisoned for doing their jobs
One in every four journalists currently in prison for their work is African. Egypt, where 25 journalists are in jail, is the worst media repressor on the continent, followed by Eritrea (16), but the “biggest setback for media freedom came in Ethiopia”, says a report by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a US-based watchdog.
Across Africa, 12 governments sent 75 journalists to jail this year ― or kept them there. That is how many were in jail on 1 December, when the press freedom watchdog did the census, and does not include those who had been jailed but were subsequently released.
In Ethiopia, where nine journalists are in jail, the repression is tied to the emergency laws imposed over the civil war in Tigray. Other countries, like Rwanda (seven) and Cameroon (six), are continuing a years-long pattern. In each of the censuses CPJ has done since 2018, Rwanda and Cameroon have had at least 11 imprisoned journalists between them.
Some cases are shocking accounts of state repression and impunity. “Egyptian photojournalist Mahmoud Abou Zeid, known as Shawkan, for example, has spent every night in police custody since he was freed from Tora prison on March 4, 2019,” the census report says.
Zeid was arrested in 2013 while covering clashes between Egyptian security forces and supporters of former president Mohamed Morsi. He was kept in prison, without conviction, for five years. In 2018, a court said he was guilty of murder and belonging to a terrorist group and sentenced him to five years, which he had already served.
He was released shortly after, but on “police observation” ― an order to report to a police station every day at sunset. “Every evening so far, police order him to spend the night in the station’s cells,” the CPJ report says.
Across the world, CPJ counted 293 journalists behind bars, with China (50), being the top repressor.

ሚድያ ስራ ወይንስ የሙስና ስራ? - በሚድያ ስራ ስም በአቋራጭ የግዙፍ ህንጻ ባለቤት ለመሆን የዘየዱት ዘዴ By Abebe Gellaw
አፍሪካ ላይ ትኩረት የሚያደርግ የሚድያ ተቋም ጋዜጠኛ ግሩም ጫላ ለማቋቋም መነሳቱን እንደ በጎ ጅምር ካዩት አንዱ ነበርኩ ማለት እችላለሁ። በእርግጥ በአገራችን በኢትዮጵያ እንኳን አህጉር አካላይ የኢትዮጵያን እውነታ በአግባቡ የሚዘግብ የሚድያ ተቋም ማቋቋም እራሱን የቻለ ፈተና ነው። ለዚህም ዋነኞቹ ችግሮች የፖሊሲና የህግ ማነቆዎች፣ የመንግስት ጣልቃ ገብነትና የሰለጠነ የባለሙያ እጥረት ናቸው።
ዛሬ ግሩም ጫላ በስካይላይት ሆቴል ግሎባል ቴሌቪዥን ኔትወርክ ኦፍ አፍሪካን (Global Television Network of Africa) በተመለከተ የሰጠው ጋዜጣዊ መግለጫ ጉዳዩ የሚድያ ፕሮጄክት ሳይሆን የብልጽና እሩጫ አስመስሎታል። በጋዜጣዊው መግለጫ ላይ እንደተነገረው ፕሮጄክቱ ከአዲስ አበባ መስተዳድር 5ሺ ካሬ ሜትር ቦታ መረከቡ ተነግሯል። የሚድያ ተቋሙ ገና የሙከራ ስርጭት ሳይጀምር ይሄን ያህል መሬት እንዴት ያስፈልገዋል? ሚድያ ለማቋቋም አዲስ አበባ ላይ ስንት ባለቤት አልባና ተከራይ አጥተው ተገትረው የሚውሉ ህንጻዎች በበዙባት ከተማ ለመገንባት መነሳት አጠያያቂ ነው። ጉዳዩ በዚህ አላበቃም።
እነ ግሩም መሬቱን ለመረከብ 30 ሚሊዮን ብር የሊዝ ክፍያ ለከተማው አስተዳደር ከፍለዋል። ለምን? ባለ 63 ወለል ህንጻ ለማሰራት!! እንኳን ገና አንዲት የሙከራ ጋዜጣ ያላሳተመ ሚድያ ይቅርና በአለማችን ላይ ግዙፍ የሚባሉት የሚድያ ተቋማት ይሄን ያህል ህንጻ አያስፈልጋቸውም። በተለይ በዚህ ዘመን እድሜ ለቴክኖሎጂ በቢሮና ስቱዲዎ ተወስኖ ስራ አይሰራም።
የሚድያ ስራ በአብዛኛው በትንሹ ተጀምሮ እያደገና እየተስፋፋ የሚሄድ እንጂ በኢትዮጵያም ይሁን በአህጉሪቱ በእርዝመቱ ተወዳዳሪ የማይገኝለት ህንጻ በመገንባት የሚጀመር አለመሆኑን ማንም ይገነዘበዋል። በመሆኑን እነግሩም በሚድያ ስም ለሚቀጥሉት በርካታ አመታት የሚጠመዱት በህንጻ ግንባታ ላይ ይሆናል ማለት ነው። በመሃል እንደ በርካታ ህንጻዎች ተጀምሮ የመቋረጥ እድሉም በጣም ከፍተኛ ነው። ምክንያቶችን መዘርዘር ይቻላል። ለጊዜው እንተወው።
በእርግጥ ዘመኑ የብልጽግና ነው። አቶ ግሩምም ከብልጽግና ፓርቲ ጋር ካላቸው ቁርኝት አንጻር በሚድያ ስራ ስም በአቋራጭ የግዙፍ ህንጻ ባለቤት ለመሆን የዘየዱት ዘዴ ብዙም ላይገርም ይችላል። ግን የሆነ ሆኖ አፍሪካ አንድ ወጥ ሚድያ ተቋም ሲቋቋምላት ችግሩ ሁሉ በግዙፍና እረጅም ህንጻ ሊከለል ነው ማለት ነው?
ስለዚህም ነው ይሄ ፕሮጄክት ከጅምሩ ከሽፏል ማለት የሚቻለው። እኔ በበኩሌ ፕሮጀክቱ መሬት፣ ገንዘብና ሃብት በማባከን በህንጻ ግንባታ ላይ መግባቱ የሚድያ ስራ ወይንስ የሙስና ስራ የሚያስብል ሆኖ አግኝቸዋለሁ። በኢትዮጵያም ይሁን በአፍሪካ እረጅሙን ህንጻ ለመገንባት መነሳት ከሚድያ ጋር ምንም ግንኙነት የለውም።
በነገራችን ላይ በአፍሪካ በከፍታው ተወዳዳሪ የሌለው በደቡብ አፍሪካ ጁሃንስበርግ የሚገኘው ሊዮናርዶ የተባለው ህንጻ ባለ 55 ወለል ነው። በጨበጣ ሊገነባ ነው የተባለው የእነ ግሩም ጫላ የሚድያ ስቱዲዮ ሪከርዱን ለመስበር 63 ወለል ያለው ህንጻ ሊገነቡ ነው መባሉ የምርመራ ጋዜጠኞች ትኩረት ሊቸሩት ይገባል ባይ ነኝ። እንደ ሰማሁት ያለምንም ዋስትና (collateral) በዋነኛነት ከፍተኛ ገንዘብ በብድር ያቀረበው የኦሮሚያ ባንክ ነው።
