Historically, they took refugee to Ethiopia or were sent as seasonal labor during Axum era. According to Professor Richard Pankhurst they were used in construction works and palace services, and later adopted a hybrid language of Amharic and Geez.

Thank you Abere for bringing to attention the plight of the Black-Muslims in the Arab world. The black Muslim slaves or Akhdams (servants) in many of Arab world such as Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Jordan ... are still inherited from one generation to the other according to the Islamic law.
The worst insult is that the Arab slaves in Eritrea, Somalia, Sudan and Ethiopia who want to be more Arabs than the Arab would often shout in the streets of the christian West about the rights of "white Arabs" or "fair skinned" Muslm Asians as in Palestine, Syria or Myanmar, as they ignore the genocide of the black Muslims in Darfur. The Arab slave Abids among us had never ever raised the plight and slavery of the black Muslims in the Arab world or Yemen.
