- Sudan seeks calm with Ethiopia in order to devote itself to resolving its internal crisis.
January 23, 2022

Sudan is seeking calm with Ethiopia in order to devote itself to resolving its internal crisis caused by the coup carried out by the army chief, Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan on the twenty-fifth of October last year.
In this regard, the Vice-President of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant-General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, met Saturday in Addis Ababa with the Ethiopian Minister of Defense Abraham Bly, in the first visit of a senior official from Khartoum to the neighboring country after a year of tension in a disputed border area, according to what the Fana network announced. The Ethiopian media and the Sudanese News Agency.
And the Sudan News Agency "SUNA" reported that General Dagalo will discuss "the bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries and ways to support and develop them to serve the interests of the two countries in all fields."
And the Transitional Sovereignty Council in Sudan announced that Daglo “arrived in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa this morning (Saturday)” on an official two-day visit, and “was received at Bole International Airport by the Ethiopian Minister of Defense Abraham Bly,and the director of intelligence and a number of officials in the Ethiopian government, along with the staff of the Sudanese embassy in Addis Ababa, led by Ambassador Jamal Al-Sheikh.
Shortly after the arrival of the Vice-President of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council to Addis Ababa, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed published a tweet in which he welcomed Dagalo, expressing his appreciation for "the deep historical ties that bind our two brotherly peoples, which cannot be separated, whatever the circumstances."
Abi Ahmed added, "We will strive to do our best to preserve and strengthen it for the good of our two countries and our peoples."
Less than two months ago, Khartoum announced that it had lost six soldiers in the fertile, disputed border region of Al-Fashqa, accusing the “army and Ethiopian militias” of being behind this. But Addis Ababa attributed that to the Tigrayan rebels it has been fighting for more than a year in a conflict that has driven tens of thousands of Ethiopians to seek refuge in Sudan.
This displacement, violence, and the issue of borders and water may be included on the agenda of this “two-day official visit,” according to the agency, which explained that General Dagalo, known as “Hemedti,” will meet with “a number of officials in Ethiopia,” without naming them.
Despite several rounds of negotiations, Sudan and Ethiopia, who have been in conflict for more than ten years over the Renaissance Dam built by Addis Ababa on the Nile River, were unable to reach an agreement on the demarcation of the border between them.
The Renaissance Dam, which is supposed to become the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa, is a source of concern for Khartoum and Cairo, whose lands the river passes through, and who fear a decrease in water supplies.
This visit comes at a time when the two countries are witnessing a cycle of violence. The civil war is escalating in Ethiopia, while Sudan is witnessing demonstrations that have been suppressed since the October 25 coup, in which more than seventy people were killed.

Re: Sudan seeks calm with Ethiopia in order to devote itself to resolving its internal crisis
Sudan should leave the sovereign land of Ethiopia. it has been part of Ethiopia since the Aksumite Kingdom. It is a shame Sudan is claiming land that was part of Ethiopia when Sudan was a British Colony. Ethiopia should nver give up it's own sovereign land to any other country. Ethiopia may be divided and form new countries - this does not matter. If the land beongs to Amhara, it will be for them if Tigray or Oromia or Somali Region secede from Ethiopia as realizing equality of ethnic groups in the current political system in Ethiopia has become impossible. Ethnic groups should enjoy equality to form unity. In the current system, The Amara elites dominate political organs and will soon take over the economy and culture as in the days of Haile Selassie or Menelik.
