Timnit Gebru (Amharic: ትምኒት ገብሩ; born 1983/1984)[1] is an Ethiopian American[3] computer scientist who works on algorithmic bias and data mining. She is an advocate for diversity in technology and co-founder of Black in AI, a community of black researchers working in artificial intelligence.

As an immigrant [Gebru is Eritrean and fled Ethiopia in her teens, during a war between the two countries], how do you feel about U.S. tech companies vying to sell AI to the Pentagon or Immigration and Customs Enforcement?
People have to speak up and say no. We can decide that what we should be spending our energy and money on is how not to have California burning because of climate change and how to have safety nets for people, improve our health, food security. For me, migration is a human right. You’re leaving an unsafe place. If I wasn’t able to migrate, I don’t know where I would be.

I am glad that I have found another cousin in addition to you.

My question is, is she Eritrean in the first place? Thousands of Tigres have been using Eritrean names to seek political asylum in the West and bear Eritrean name on paper. So, I doubt her Eritrean status. It could be simply a result of paper work.

She claimed to be Ethiopian until TPLF got cornered, then she started screaming "genocide" followed by "I'm Eritrean"!

Abere,
I have never met her but she is my cousin. Thanks for the information! That is one of the pitfalls of generalization given that large number of Tigres been fake asylees using Eritrean identity. Not all statistical inferences lead to truth. There are always outliers in every society, not surprising to thinks and does like TPLF. There are many Amhara that think, speak and act like TPLF-Tigre thugs.

What's the difference between Eritrean Tigres and Ethio-Tigres? Isn't that like the difference between Amhara Menze, Godjame, Gondere?
Listening to Harmela and mother, it is obvious that those who are brainwashed are the ones who are, "TPLF-Tigre thugs", an ideology incorporated in the Ethiopian Constitution; non Tigres like Shene follow same; some "Eritreans" as well. In other words, the rest of Ethiopian Tigres who aren't brainwashed can't be any different from other Ethiopians.
In the following Harmela brings out a "non Ethnic", Ethiopian, pan African, global point of view. Good for her! We should all learn from her.

- Dawi,
The Eritrean philosophy is just like that of the Ethiopian philosophy. Example : the Amharas de-emphasizing their Amharaness in favour of Ethiopianness. It is not bad as long as it is not exaggerated. Someone like me who complains about not getting a piece of land in his ancestral land around the capital Asmara because it is being given to others against the traditional rules is considered as narrow-minded. They take your property and in return you get insulted in the name of national unity. I am not going to explain it further for you because you know what happened in areas surrounding Addis Abeba. That sounds familiar for me as an Eritrean.!!!! )
Tigrigna speakers (Eritreans) and Tigrayigna(Tigray/ the reality is that most Tigrayans neither speak Tigrayigna nor Amharigna. It is a mix of the two. Very funny people but in music they are gradually using standard Tigrigna) speakers are totally different in terms of history, culture and psyche. An Amhara Menze,Gojame or Gondere has a greater chance of assimilating in highland Eritrea than a Tigrayan. Almost all Tigrayans born in Eritrea who now reside in the West are against Eritrea, both Muslims and Christians . On the other side you have someone with a family name Wedi 'jigu or Wedi Chekol but who is perfectly happy with his Eritrean identity in peace and war time.
The behaviour of Timnit looks like that of the Tigrayans who lived among us but for some unknown reason hate us.

Dawi,
I think I got the answer for my question. She is an Eritrean by origin and I believed him because he is an Eritrean. I think you emphasized unnecessarily on one statement and misinterpret it. I don't see any problem both from him and the Eritrean point of view. One is the proper set and the other is the sub-set. I mean not only in the Habesha context but also in the U.S. one calls himself a Washingtonian native at the same time an American. It depends on the context you are using it.
This is a common place thing.

5 things with... Dr. Timnit Gebru (Exclusive)
Timnit was in town as a guest speaker on a very ambitious project, Girls Can Code (GCC) that was held at the national archives & library of Ethiopia this past Saturday. GCC program was launched in 2015 and Hiwot Bishawis the project manager. Students with interest in coding from 9 high schools were part of the project this year. Dr Timnit shared her experience on AI & coding to students and attendees in a discussion that was carried out by the host of the event, Saba Kahsay
EthioCreatives sat down exclusively with Timnit to do our "5 things with..." segment. Here it is.
EC/1. A lot of us here in Ethiopia don't know most of talented Ethiopians abroad doing amazing things. So, who is Timnit? What is her speciality? Why AI? What was the most difficult thing to do when you started this journey?
I started working in AI a few years ago. Before that, I was a hardware engineer. I didn't really plan on working in AI. I worked on optical medical devices at some point and got interested in image processing of the acquired images. Then I got interested in computer vision, data mining etc and that's how I got into AI. The most difficult thing is not the subject but the isolation you feel when you are a woman, and specifically a Black woman and also someone from Africa and you are in the US working in this field.
EC/2. Is it difficult to be a woman in the AI world? Why do you think more girls are not participating on AI field? What should be done to increase women's participation in coding? Especially here in Ethiopia.
Yes, its difficult because of the attitude of those in the field and the conscious and subconscious ways in which you constantly have to prove yourself. People constantly get interrupted, your ideas get attributed to the nearest man (or they are just not taken seriously) you get underpaid and undervalued, but if you negotiate for higher salary or position or something like this you are made to feel petty and like you are asking for too much. Even the women who start to leave because of things like this, the environment is hostile.
EC/3. What do you think should be done in order for us Ethiopians to find AI interesting and be part of it by involving in big projects? Do you believe we have what it takes?
The most prestigious thing to study in Ethiopia is medicine. I think if Ethiopians understood that AI could be applied to all sectors (including medicine), they would be excited about it. I believe we have what it takes but we have to be supportive of our youth and create opportunities for them. I also think that there is a lack of information where people don't know that they can even do this.
EC/4. Do you visit Ethiopia often or is it your first time? What is your favourite thing in Addis? What can you say about the coding and programming industry in Ethiopia? What do you think needs to be done to make it compete with the rest of the word?
Yes, I visit often. My favourite thing in Addis is how there are many cafes and other places to hang out. I like initiatives like Ice Addis. We need to have more of those. The one thing I noticed is that there is not only a lack of information but a lack of a countrywide network. People don't know about the different initiatives other people are doing. One needs to have a strong network of people to get anything done. We need to have a very good university curriculum and postgraduate curriculum. We also need to have labs where students can practice coding. People should think about creating technology that works in their context. For example, many people don't have access to computers but they have access to smartphones. How can we teach computer science using smartphones?
EC/5. What should we expect from Timnit in the future? New projects coming up? What would your friends say if we ask them about you? Tell us who Timint is minus AI life. Her hobby or talents...
Hopefully, more research output as well as fruitful initiatives to bring international conferences to Ethiopia, grow the tech echo system, interest in AI etc. My friends would say that I am a very absent-minded person and lose everything. I like music, dancing hanging out with family, friends etc.
We would like to thank Timnit for taking the time to chat with us and share her amazing insight. We wish her all the best in her future and endeavours. We also would like to thank GCC program project manager, Hiwot, for inviting us to the event.

Revu,
I don't think it matters whether Timnit is Eritrean or Ethiopian. You can not erase her Eritreaness just because she doesn't agree with Isayas. Forget about the condoms here who pim-p for you and your likes. There are many many Eritreans who do not agree with the way Isayas has led Eritrea for the last thirty years. BTW, give him credit, the midget recognized our independence. History in Eritrea will be rectified some day.

Don't blame me for her self inflicted nationality crisis and don't bring Issu in for something he has no knowledge of (i.e the nationality of said person who switched claimed nationality when TPLF lost). It's that simple, dude!

Abere,
What new "information" did you find?
That Abe dislikes Eritrean Philosophy?
"Of course I am against her political stand. ባሁን ጊዜ በኤርትራ ከየት እንደመጣህ ስትናገር ሰዎች በጣም ይናደዳሉ ። እስከ መሳደብም ሊደርሱ ይችላሉ ። ባገራችን ኣንድ ትልቅ ሰው ሲሞት በጋዜጣ ከስሙ በስተቀር ሌላ ምንም ኣይጻፍም ።" Remember "ትምኒት ገብሩ" can have family in both places.

Abe,
Got it!
Thank you for taking the time to explain my one sided look at your comment written to Abere.
I look at this as one example of Eritreans/Ethiopians building confidence in points of discussions among other things these days.
Cheers!
