I wish this was true because we want to break the shackles once and for all. There are only two American Companies in Awassa Industrial Park. They already have stopped production. There were about 528 employees working in those companies who got laid off. Most of those employees are absorbed by other companies in the park except about 62 workers who are in the process of being employed by another sector. This implies that the impact is close to zero.
On another note, China and Italy are offering the same trading terms like AGOA. If anything, the prices of some apparels will be increasing for the American consumers.
If the Diaspora going back to Ethiopia now are to spend only $1,000 each, that amounts to a billion dollars. That is close to what the country gets in the form of forex from AGOA in three years. The AGOA hype is only a political tool and has no real time negative impact on the economy as some may presume.
