- Sudan... Wide controversy after a child was expelled from school for allegedly "insulting religion"
Sudanese little Sebdoyeley, only 6 years old.
Social networking sites in Sudan witnessed widespread controversy over the decision to expel a 6-year-old child from his private school, on the grounds of “offending religion.”
Sudanese media reported that the school, located in Gezira state, south of the capital, Khartoum, issued a statement attributing the reason for the dismissal to “its failure in all attempts to improve the student’s behavior,” especially after his mother’s insistence on supporting that behavior, which the school considered “contrary to faith and religion.”
The pioneers of the communication sites circulated the administration's statement extensively, while media reports stated that the incident began in a post that the mother wrote on her page via "Facebook", in which she said that her child a lot of existential questions, about "creation and the creator", and the truth of Satan, and that the administration conveyed to her questions The child repeated about those things, and they asked her to prevent him from repeating them.
After the mother refused to prevent her child from asking questions, and a verbal argument took place with the social worker inside the school, the mother returned with her child to the house, only to be surprised by his dismissal in a decision she described as “arbitrary.”
The Sudanese newspaper, Al-Taghair, quoted the mother as saying that “the school environment affected her son’s behavior in a frightening manner,” considering that he “needs psychological treatment.”
"The school's decision to expel the student was not successful," Ibrahim Abdeen, the former director of private education in the state of Al Jazeera told the newspaper.
He added, "The teacher should have discussed the child within the limits of his understanding, or left him until he grew up to realize these big and deep concepts by himself."
He pointed out that the decision to dismiss "appears harsh," adding: "The Islamic religion itself does not hold a person accountable until after puberty, so how can the school administration punish a young child?"
Social media platforms witnessed a wide campaign of solidarity with the child, and activists launched the hashtag “I support the child, Mutasim Ahmed.”
Following the criticism that rained down on the school, the administration published on Facebook a statement in which it explained that the child had been undergoing “psychological treatment” for a while, and that he had “aggressive behavior,” and that the treatment was carried out in agreement with his mother, and that the latter was the one who decided to remove him from the school, requesting that he not be involved. In the religious part, being "atheist".
The school accused the child's mother of abusing its staff and teachers, as well as verbally assaulting staff.
After the school's statement, the communication sites witnessed a sharp division over the issue, as some accused the child's mother of being the one who caused the issue, which is still causing widespread controversy.
