The Italian language poster on the wall in Adwa reads:
«Genti del Tigrai, udite. Voi sapete che dove sventola la Bandiera Italiana vi é libertà. Perciò nel vostro Paese la schiavitù, sotto qualunque forma, é soppressa. Gli schiavi che attualmente sono nel Tigrai sono liberati, e la compera e la vendita degli schiavi sono vietate. Chi contravverrà alle disposizioni del presente bando sarà severamente punito come trasgressore agli ordini del Governo».
Translation:
"People of Tigray, listen. You know that where the Italian flag flies there is freedom. Therefore in your country slavery, in whatever form, is abolished. The slaves who are currently in Tigray are freed, and the buying and selling of slaves is prohibited. Anyone who contravenes the provisions of this announcement will be severely punished as a transgressor to the orders of the Italian Government."
