"The Global Society of Tigrai Scholars and Professionals (GSTS) urges US Government and Diplomatic Missions in Addis Ababa to Visit Unlawful Detention Centers in Ethiopia and Put All Pressure on the Ethiopian Government to Immediately Release the detainees, both civilians and former men and women in uniform.

* In this regard, GSTS has repeatedly appealed to the international community, including the United Nations and the African Union, of their obligation to uphold the basic principles of international human rights and humanitarian laws. However, these calls do not seem to have been heeded to so far, as evidenced by the continuation of the practice of unlawful mass detentions and pervasive hate speech by senior government officials and prominent pro-government personalities calling for total internment of Tigrayans in concentration camps. Further, many of the major figures in Abiy's administration, some of them holding American and European passports, are publicly calling for the extermination of Tigrayans residing outside of territories controlled by Tigray Defense forces (TDF).
* In light of the continued genocidal incitement against Tigrayans, GSTS calls on the United States government, particularly the Senate and the State Department, to apply maximum pressure on the Ethiopian government to immediately cease targeting civilians and release those who have been detained unlawfully and without due process.
* GSTS specifically calls on the US Senate and State Department to urgently visit or ensure that the detention centers, official and ad hoc, are visited to ascertain the safety and security of those detainees and establish an objective assessment of the conditions of their detention. GSTS believes any proactive steps taken, including visits by the US authorities, US senators, and diplomats based in Ethiopia to the detention centers is urgently needed to ensure the well-being of the detainees.
* Moreover, it may send a strong signal to the Ethiopian government that the US government and the US Senate will not tolerate any extra-judicial measures taken against these detainees, both civilians and former men and women in uniform."
