Getting the record straight: The only crime my daughter Hermela Aregawi and I have is being born as women to the Tigrean society. Having one of the worst cultures on women on planet earth, women having an independent mind is a foreign concept to Tigray and Tigreans. This undoubtedly have been proven by how the Tigreans have been treating us on the global board. We don’t mind being trailblazers.

This has nothing to do with the independence of women or gender equality which is hyped in the west and highlighted by the Mother of Hermela , This has to do with herd mentality on which the leeches have implanted on every Tigrian. They have indoctrinated Tigrians to echo every crap the leeches have preached.

With all the respect To Hermela aregawi and her mother, she is out of order when she claimS that Tigrians have some how have the worst culture on women. If she is against Patriarchal society in General, it is one thing but to badmouth the culture which raised her in an effort to defend her daughter is another.

Shining light in the darkness of bad culture is not badmouthing, unless you're also the celebrator and beneficiary of such bad culture/value.

Yemane Negus was not of a female gender but he was gunned down in the middle of Mekele just because he opposed the leeches, The reason why the leeches are framing and character assassinating Hermela Aregawi has nothing to do with the organ between her legs but with her independent and opposing views. Herd mentality is a big challenge for many years to come in my view for the whole of our societies, because we fostered it for our own political expediency, purposely. The long term damage was conveniently ignored, we have seen many things happen in our time. We are paying the price. It is not limited to Tigray these days, to be honest here.

Critical and independent thinking was deliberately subdued in our society, boundaries were drawn and the thinking pattern was prescribed for all on the other sides of the "boundary" to adhere to that pattern. We are going to have a big homework for many years to come.

At the same time I can't consciously deny that there is a culture based bias in our society (of the bigger region), that has to be also tackled. If we can't tackle it, then this will also going to end hurting us for years to come. Just because it is our culture, it doesn't mean that it is not critc prone.

The way forward is to look at it critically and try to mend it, if some components of our culture are incompatible with current norms and today's world outlook, for this to happen the first step is also openly talking about it and this lady deserved a respect in my view. We have to think about why she said it. An open society must be ready to adopt to new realities and adjust itself for the future demands.

Stagnant society will only hurt itself, because it is simply closed to the outside world and that will hurt over the long run as well.

I am falling in love with what this family values as member of a society, have a high regard for their openness and forward looking attitudes. But I don't know them, we need many more like this family to change our society, in my view again.

Believing that you are an outsider to Tigray society, she can speak about the society she is part of better than you or anyone else. Before liberalism was stashed in our throats by former communist and current left wing politicians, the region had a custom on which girls virginity is cherished and respected and I presume Tigrians are no different. If some how, you dare to [deleted] a girl and dishonor her family, expect retribution with interest. The 7/3 eletas are common in Eritrea as well (at least, in the highland area, as far as I understand). My question is:
Is it the same or different culture in Ethiopia regarding this specific practice, considering that the country is endowed with more than 80 tribal groups?

Are non Tigrian Ethiopians any different than Tigrian Ethiopians when it comes to their role in the household? Let's talk about rape in Tigray since it is eyebrow raising topic . In the BBC Tigrigna program, there was a topic about the subject and many women were holding demonstration against the leniency of the leeches toward the culprits who committed the crime. If it was a common practice or culture as some people assume, there would have never been a demonstration or opposing view against this practice. The situation in Tigray is compounded by poverty, ignorance and God-less Malelit otherwise in general women are not treated very well all over the world.In the Arab world it is horror. In the West domestic violence and seksual harassment are rife.

Like what Abe Abraham pointed out gender based exploitation is a common place phenomenon. Among all the over 85 and plus ethnics groups in Ethiopia there are bunch of derogatory cultural practices that affect women social, economic, health, psychological , etc. well beings. However, the extent , prevalence and types of such practices vary from one tribe to another even within the same tribe from one place to another. As I said the most important thing is to acknowledge the presence of any of the harmful cultural elements that obstruct women realizing their full potential. And you don't have expect Professor Haregewoine to subject to all of the worlds harmful practices she had enough of it from her own childhood village. I think the Tigre women are probably the most suppressed. There is even a common saying: If you want to get wealthy, marry a Gurgahe woman; if you want have a docile or submissive wife, marry a Tigre woman; if you love beauty and a vibe(ለዐደባባይ), marry to an Amhara wife, etc.

It should be well understood that the amount of how many times Elelta (እልልታ) is performed is not of significance in our culture. On the other hand, its biblical context matters a lot.

Number 3 is a symbol of divinity or trinity while Number 7 is a symbol of completion or perfection.
