Ethiopia's current population is estimated at around 115 Million, with the youth making around 70% of the total, which makes the actual number of youth population around 80 Million.
Ethiopia is also materially a resourceful country, two basic necessities to combine the two and make product that can propell the country on the path of growth.
This is pure economics, if we can't combine the two efficiently then the cost could be very high as well, that amount of human lives is also a consumer, it needs to be fed and other necessities need to be fulfilled. Energetic people consume also more like they perform better in producing energy.
In addition to the 2 resources (human capital and material resources like land, water, monetary capital etc.) we also need knowledge to make the combination more efficient or even viable. Modern economy is based on a global order based on competitiveness, to be competitive knowledge is a key component.
Knowledge is gained through, for the most part, education and for that a qualitiy education is needed.
Those who opted to stay out of education are showing the wider public of the world how dumb they are (remained): they start war and when the aggressed hits back using the state of the art weapon of war, they go public complaining "we are hit by drones".
If they had knowledge, then that would have also helped them to make an informed decision and pause for a while and think twice before aggressing on others.
Drones, like all other war-machines and tools, are created by means of knowledge and knowledge is a result of education. They underplayed the role of education all along, now the chicken comes home to roost.
So, sending the ethiopian youth to quality education will spare them from such public embarrassment, among others, in the future.
At the same time to make our production competitive enough education is vital, else we risk plunging in a great trap.
But education itself is under attack in the modern era of ubiquitous mass media and world of worshipping anything about stars, movie stars, sports star, music star, Youtube video star, everything starts and ends with star, it seems.
Children are constantly distracted from pursuing knowledge and path of education.
There was a remark I still remember by Ato Andergachew Tsigie who observed that the current young generation in our country doesn't read a single book outside of the curriculum path, even after graduating from a university. This is sad, a worrying sign that our future could be in a difficulty.
I was also listenlistening to an interview by Mr. Freeman, an African analyst, pointing out precisely saying the current generation is deeply "contaminated" and can't think rationally beyond the worshipping of stars of sports, movies, etc. This is really a sad state.
With declining quality education, our capacity to make an informed decision will also deteriorate and potentially lead us to plunge into chaoes. TPLF is a leaving testimony to this claim.
I am not here to write about TPLF but trying to raise my concern about the Ethiopian youth education and I feel it should unsettle many of us, unless urgent measures are taken to remedy it, swiftly and decisively.
Invest, invest and invest in a quality education as soon as possible, we don't have much time to waste!
