Why did Abiy Ahmed ignore the former Defense Minster's warnings?

Abiy is not an intellectually sophisticated person; and knowing his shortcoming he should have surrounded himself with intelligent nerdy advisors who knew their stuff inside out. However, he selected socially popular advisors such as Daniel Kibret, Birhanu Negga and Andargachew Tsigie.
Why he accepted the risk of changing the governance system to a unitary state format without convincing EPRDF member parties, and why he chose to please the Amhara elites knowing that they were determined to achieve a unitary state system at any cost is mind-boggling. I still believe that if Demeke or that Sheferar guy were in charge, they would not have made the mistakes of setting up a new party at the risk of losing TPLF; and trying to subdue Tigray militarily.
"Once feted as a peacemaker and a reformer, the prime minister increasingly looks like a liability, and it is not impossible to imagine that he will join the growing list of recently deposed African leaders that includes Guinea’s Alpha Condé and Mali’s Bah Ndaw."
How could he ignore the former Defense Minster's warnings?
