This pull back or abort the operation thing seems liability. While I am not as extreme as you, Ethiopia has always lost when stand down occurs and who advices this. I don't believe Mengistu is good either, but during the war at the time, there were Eplf and Tplf groups within military who give information even the generals, every time the army was about to control Asmara, some Derg generals order to stand down. I heard Mengistu did not know about this. However he/Derg are still failures. Now the war between Tplf and Eplf in 1991, when the army was easily to advance, Meles Zenawi said to stand down and retreat. Meles in return ordered the killing of the same military he begged to free Tigray from Shabia/Eplf caprture. Now, under the current government the same thing happened, after capturing Mekele, the ENDF was ordered to leave Mekele. For sure, some force is enjoying the mass killings of especially Ethiopoians when they almost won. The same thing happened now.
