Remarks by Ms. Amakobe Sande UN Resident Coordinator in Eritrea on United Nations Day 2021

https://shabait.com/2021/10/23/united-n ... n-eritrea/

GENERAL

Oct 23, 2021

Your Excellency Mr. Osman Saleh, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Eritrea;

Excellencies, Ministers of Government and officials of the Peoples’ Front For Democracy and Justice;

Your Excellencies Ambassadors, Heads of Missions and Members of the Diplomatic Corps

Members of the UN Country Team in Eritrea and all UN Colleagues,

Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen.

Thank you, on behalf of the United Nations Family in Eritrea, for joining us this evening as we mark UN Day 2021. We are deeply honoured that you could all come.

Ladies and gentlemen,

As often happens, annual observances can become an automatic ritual and, over time, they lose their sharp messages and purpose. We must therefore always remind ourselves of the purpose of Our United Nations.

The UN was founded 76 years ago, in pursuit of the ideals of global peace and security; good relations and cooperation among nations to solve political, economic, social, cultural, 3 problems; and (I quote) in defense of human rights and freedoms with a shared belief for the dignity and worth of every human being, the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom (end of quote).

The preamble of the United Nations charter which came into force on the 24th October 1945, has a powerful beginning. It starts with
we the people of the United Nations.
We must never forget that, while the UN is an assembly of Member States, at core, it is Our United Nations, We the People………

I would bring to the room again the words of the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, whose recorded message we have just watched:
The values that have powered the UN Charter for the last 76 years — peace, development, human rights, and opportunity for all are values that have no expiry date.
Thus, despite the imperfections of the international system and the challenges we face, we must never give up on the ideals for which the UN was established.

We must never give up on global peace and security and developing fruitful relations and cooperation among nations.

We must never give up on greater freedom, dignity and rights for all.

We must never give up on cooperation between nations in order to solve economic, social, cultural, environmental or humanitarian international problems.

We must never give up on our hopes and dreams for education and health for every child and every mother; food on the proverbial table of every family; opportunity for our young people to pursue and find their dreams; respect and prosperity for all, big or small; safety and succor for those in distress including those needing our care and protection, wherever they may be. This is why we are the United Nations!

And we must never give up on the multilateralism, which the UN stands for. If anything, there can be no better platform than the UN to collectively work on our pressing challenges – climate change, our common desire for peace, security, shared prosperity and human dignity for all. These, more than ever, demand that Member States work better together and provide the leadership and the political will necessary for the more fundamental reforms required to upgrade Our United Nations to a mature and robust institution, fit for the 21st century and beyond. We need more commitment to multilateralism, not less!

Excellencies, Ladies and gentlemen,

I wish to commend Eritrea, for its commitment to protect multilateralism. Its desire to take up leadership roles in the United Nations (be it in New York, in Geneva or in Nairobi) and its active participation in UN processes is strong evidence that Eritrea takes its role as a member state of the United Nations seriously.

A week from now, the world will gather in Glasgow, Scotland for the 26th United Nations Climate Change conference, or COP26, seen by many as a last-ditch effort to build international consensus on saving the planet.

Eritrea made a very early commitment to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), going back to 1995. I commend Eritrea for submitting its Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) to the COP21 in Paris in 2015. Eritrea is doing excellent work, towards mitigating the effects of climate change. From national tree planting to the protection of terrestrial and marine resources, the Government is walking the talk. I urge Eritrea to stay the course and push on with its commitment to the UNFCCC process.

Your excellency, Ladies and Gentlemen

I am honoured and privileged to be here to celebrate my first UN Day since my arrival in Eritrea, about 4 months ago. Please allow me to claim all the privileges and allowances accorded to a newcomer, and to reflect for a minute on those first 4 months as the leader of the UN here in Eritrea.

First, I feel extremely honoured to be in this role of supporting the development vision of Eritrea as a Member State of the UN. Thank you, for receiving me so warmly. I am still learning and understanding, the unique historical and development context of Eritrea. Already, I have come to admire the pride in identity of the Eritrean people and their singular determination to cut a unique path to development and to uplift the lives and national dignity of Eritreans. The country has achieved so much, amidst great and growing challenges. And now, COVID-19 has had untold impacts on the socio-economic fabric and we are faced with even more challenges with the present regional geo-politics after a glimmer of hope for a different path in 2018.

It is perhaps for this reason that, every day I wake up and head to the office, and every evening as I return home, my mind wanders to questions of how my dedicated team and I, can be ever more useful, in support of Eritrea’s development aspirations. To put it a little more directly, I have wondered whether we, as a team, are doing even a quarter of what we could do together with you. This message is not new. I believe, it was also shared by my predecessor. The UN in Eritrea can do much more than it is currently doing, to support the government and people of Eritrea. We have a devoted family of national and international colleagues, skilled and experienced in various fields, committed and idealistic, who wake up every day to deliver less than they should. That can’t be right.

We are here, we are ready to serve and make real the vision of the United Nations in its obligations to its member states.

Please, put us to work!

As we move together to the period of a new Cooperation Framework from 2022, it is my hope that we will see an increasingly robust movement in the programmes we have developed jointly with you. Eritrea prides itself, and rightly so, for its achievements in the MDG era. We can do much more together to focus forward, in this “decade of action” to address the integrated agenda of the SDGs. The times are challenging, I know, but our collective will can deliver more for the people we serve.

As we prepare for the work ahead, I reaffirm the commitment of the United Nations in Eritrea to work in partnership with the Government of the State of Eritrea to achieve its development goals and as we do so, to ensure no one is left behind on the country’s path to prosperity.

I thank the GoSE and our development partners for the continued collaboration and cooperation, to deliver for the people of Eritrea.

Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

I conclude by, once again, echoing the words of the SG:
As we mark UN Day, let’s unite, and live up to the full promise, potential and hope of the United Nations.
Long live the UN-Eritrea cooperation. Long live the Ideals of the UN Charter. Happy UN Day!

YeQeniyeley!

Asmara, 22 October 2021

Youth Innovators win the African World Heritage Day competition in Eastern Africa

By Mussie Efriem

https://shabait.com/2021/10/23/youth-in ... eaPrevails

Q & A

Oct 23, 2021

They were among the six youth finalists of the 2021 African World Heritage Day Competition, in Eastern Africa. 200 competitors from 11 countries, participated in the competition. And here is an interview with the youth engineers who represented Eritrea in the competition and managed to come out among the six finalists: Eng. Michael Berhe, Eng. Filmon Tesfamariam and Eng. Aman Desbele.

Could you please give us an overview of the competition?

Well, the competition was carried out in accord with the World Heritage Day, May 5, where 13 East African countries were invited but 11 countries including Eritrea participated. It was organized by the UNESCO, intended for “Awareness raising and engagement of the youth in the protection and promotion of African World Heritage”. Our project was among the six proposals that qualified for the finalists of the competition, from over 200 entries. The other wining groups are from Uganda, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Tanzania and Kenya.

What was its objective?

Overall, the competition’s objective is to select shortlist of 6 project proposals and finance them for their implementation. Accordingly, our project proposal became among the selected projects according to the requirement and vote of the advisory panel of the UNESCO and advisory panel of the World Heritage Committee.

What was your project about and how did you develop the idea?

We knew each other starting from College, and we had several finished projects together. Besides, we also shared different ideas and held thorough discussions on each of them. One of the ideas we shared was making a Mobile Tour App which visitors can use to get the needed information about Asmara, the capital of Eritrea; but for various reasons, we didn’t finalize it. It was in the middle of this, that the chance to present our idea came up through the competition. We made some modifications to the original idea and submitted it to the competition, which we finally won.

What inspired you to bring this idea?

It has been told in many occasions that Asmara has been added to the World Heritage List, in 2016. Therefore, as it coincided with what we were already planning, we thought that we better focus on Asmara than taking other World Heritage sites in our region. According to the terms of the competition, our project intended to reach out to the society in general and the youth in particular through a mobile App in a user-friendly manner. So we hope that the App will be helpful in raising public knowledge about Asmara, in addition to boosting their awareness about World Heritage.

Its practicability?

As we mentioned earlier, the project has been monitored by UNESCO and its partners. Accordingly, UNESCO has been facilitating the project and has a plan to carry out the project on the first half of November 2021.

How will it be helpful?

It is designed to introduce visitors with the architectural beauty of Asmara which were listed by the UNESCO, as a significant part of the world heritage. This includes; the essential facts, history and the current condition of the buildings or monuments in the capital. In addition, it will serve as an official app (Tour App) which gives visitors basic information.

What could to be the upcoming challenges, and advantages of the project?

It is difficult to foresee the possible challenges, at this point in time. May be, there could be some odds along the way including possible delays in the information gathering process. Other than that, we don’t expect any major challenge that could hold back our project. Speaking of the advantages, we consider this opportunity as a great advantage to introduce our city to the world. Besides, the idea of making this App came ahead of Asmara being added to the World Heritage List.

Did you think you could win?

Obviously, wining is every participant’s dream. So we took part in the competition to win. But it is true that we had certain doubts, because there were numerous competitors. But fortunately, our dream came to reality.

How was the winning moment?

When the UNESCO office in Eritrea called and told us about the news, we were very excited and it really was a very special moment for us. And also, we were more invigorated after we checked it by ourselves on the UNESCO official website.

Who will be your co-partners in the practical part?

Primarily, we have the UNESCO office in Asmara and the Asmara Heritage Project (AHP). We also expect the Asmara Municipality Office, the Ministry of Tourism , Commission of Sports and Culture, along with other pertinent bodies to be on our side.

Have you ever been a part of similar programs before, and your tip to the youth?

As we came to know later, there are many programs that focus on Eastern Africa and this is just one of them. And that was our first experience, to participate in a competition like this. But, we didn’t have any idea about all this before. In fact, we learned about the competition when the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students (NUEYS) released information about it. For sure, there is not enough information about such competitions, but the youth should look for information and be a part of both regional and international contests of a kind. In line with this, the national institutions have to provide grounds for the young generation to have a wider view.

Do you have other projects you did together?

Yes, we have had some projects we share such as Kebhi- a website- Idu tube and several data bases for inventories and hotel managements.

Your plans…?

First and foremost, we aspire to see the successful completion of what we have already started. And after this, we have plans to work on projects which we believe are useful to the community and the society at large.

Is there anything else that you want to add at the end?

We want to thank the NUEYS, the UNESCO representative in Asmara, Mrs. Weyni Abay, and Mr. Mengs, whose advises we value a lot in the projects we work on. In addition, we want to extend our appreciation in advance to those who will work with us in the completion of our project.

My Sweet Memories About Eritrea and its People

https://shabait.com/2021/10/23/my-sweet ... ts-people/

GENERAL

Oct 23, 2021

Allow me some space in your highly rated newspaper to at least pen down something special about the great State of Eritrea and its most outstanding resource, the people of Eritrea. This is a first-hand testimony, as witnessed by myself on the ground. It was indeed an eye opener to me, and also overoptimistic that it was also the case to many others the world over as well.

I landed at the Asmara International Airport on the 6th October, 2021 to attend the 66th regular session of the Desert Locust Control Organization Council of Ministers held between 7th and 8th October, 2021 at the Asmara Palace Hotel, being the sole candidate for the position of Director of the Organization, though for technical grounds, which were fair enough in maintaining the corporate integrity, was called off till a later date.

The warmth, straightforwardness and a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood of the people of Eritrea was witnessed first-hand on landing at the Asmara International Airport. I did not bring along the wheel chair with me, but almost instantly I was offered one on arrival by the joyous protocol and immigration fellows and ended up using the same wheel chair for the entire period I stayed in this majestic country. That is a special welcoming gesture for a visitor with specialized needs like myself and I can assure your esteemed readers and the entire population that this is only very peculiar and special with the people of this State and not common among many others. The protocol and immigration officials were so professional and humble, comparable to none in this universe.

The next point of exclusive peculiarity, was with our dedicated drivers. They were meticulous, humble, very dedicated, and indeed very punctual. The attendants at hotels and all visited restaurants were very unique, in attending to their customers. It was as if they all went through the same teacher. Since punctuality and embracing the truth, nothing but the truth is one of your traditional values, there is no doubt about their way of behaving. That alone speaks volumes, on the nature and traditional values of the people of Eritrea. You have a very robust and trusted human resource capital to say the least.

The level of organization and arrangements put in place by our hosts, DLCO-EA does not need to be expounded any further. The team did a splendid work to make sure the event turned out to be a success story to reckon with. I am pretty sure this needed a lot of input in terms of preparations, organizing and supervising the whole thing which is very tiresome to the organizers, but it is congrants to the DLCO-EA team including the fantastic guys like Dr. Stephen Njoka, Dr. Berhane Asgedom and Mr. Yohanness Beki to name only a few among many. It was an event of its own magnitude and success in my professional view.

The warmth of the senior Eritrean government officials led by the Agriculture Minister Hon. Arefaine Berhe spoke volumes not only among his fellow ministers, but also to common people like myself who had just presented myself as a candidate for the stated cause. He took us through the rich traditional epitome within Eritrea in such a short time span like the traditional cuisine and even the coffee show escorted by traditional and indeed very sweet Tigrinya dances, which are indeed very traditional enough to explain the sweetness of the traditional African dances. Mr. Mohamed Saleh Hamid (Director of the Ceremony Head in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and his capable team) did a fantastic job in making sure everything was moving according to the plan and very majestically succeeded in achieving just that. I must confess upfront that I have visited so many countries thus far, many of which are ruined with the so-called corruption and similar vices, but your beloved state doesn’t seem to be close to that rot. Kindly keep that spirit up and you have yourself to defeat. A country which has been able to put these evils behind itself like yours, will definitely prosper no matter what.

I also had the rare opportunity of visiting a number of places within Asmara that left me bemused with the richness of the antiques of all sorts in this city, starting with the Architectural designs dating back to many thousand years which resembles the majestic Roma Empire in every aspect. For sure, Asmara is another Roma. Those from the majestic Italian capital for sure can’t tell the difference between these two sister cities. This by itself, if well packaged and given an outstanding marketing strategy, will pull a lot of foreign currency from the tourism sector that could be put into a formidable use to spur the national socio-economic and cultural development of the State of Eritrea.

I had the privilege of having visited a number of other historical sites depicting the extent of damaged weaponry and others like aircrafts destroyed badly during the liberation struggle and which indeed depict the richness and historical diversity of the State of Eritrea that needs to be fully documented and digitalized for ease of storage for use by the future generations of this magnificent state and Africa in general. In line with that, I was also highly elated to note that two of our departed heroes are in the memory of many Eritreans as having taken part and supported you immensely during that struggle. These are the father of the Tanzanian Nation Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere and Prof. Abdulrahman Mohamed Babu.

Something rang into my memory, as well. I was in the convoy of dignitaries that drove to the horse farm owned by the Ministry of Agriculture where we also enjoyed the traditional coffee show without a police escort and people along the road were meticulously respectful, whenever our drivers signaled for them to give way to the convoy. That was a clear testimony of the level of law abiding citizenry this majestic state is bestowed with and top rank security assurance, within the State of Eritrea. For sure I did not ever expect that in my learned view, but since seeing is believing, I have witnessed this for myself, and for sure I have a lot to tell about this country.

Capitalizing on all the above highlighted positive aspects, I am very optimistic that the State of Eritrea is one of the best investment destinations in the making in Africa. It is the panacea, in the making. There are only a few additives and adhesives here and there that are needed sooner than later, to make this country a potential hide-out for those seeking fruitful investment destinations in Africa and beyond. And when that happens, there will be very few comparable competitors to challenge your esteem and vigour.

The State of Eritrea stands a better chance to rock the world in the investment industry and platforms, since there are many meticulous opportunities that will be turned into resource pulling machines with only a little effort. You can make it guys. You have what it takes, to turn fortunes in your favour. Whatever you can imagine, you can be. Just go for it, brothers and sisters. You will make it.

They were so many eye openers to many of us but to say the least, let me end here by Praying the Almighty God to Bless Our Continent, Africa and also Blessing the State of Eritrea.
