Eritrea, Re-elected to the UNHRC.
Posted: 14 Oct 2021, 15:26
As a member of @UN_HRC Eritrea actively participated, shared ideas and experiences enriching the HRC proceedings. It maintained a strong stance in upholding the principles in the UN Institution Building Package resolutions.
Eritrea continues to fulfill its international and regional treaty body reporting obligations under, to name a few, CEDAW, UNCRC, UPR, ICCPR, @achpr_cadhp, ACERWC...#
Eritrea is party to 121 International Conventions and instruments as well as other regional instruments; including the African Charter on human and people’s rights, the African Charter for the rights and welfare of children and 16 other regional conventions.
The transitional & the new Penal & Civil Codes in use in Eritrea incorporate significant parts of international human rights instruments. The provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights are reflected in the Transitional Codes.
Eritrea exerted effort at raising the efficiency and effectiveness of the international human rights architecture, in particular the @UN_HRC, through dignified engagement and international cooperation based on partnerships.
Eritrea consistently opposed politicized resolutions in the @UN_HRC and voted accordingly and will consolidate this position in the future. Eritrea’s voting pattern reflects that it acts solely based on the merit of each voted draft resolution.
Eritrea emerged out of a long, difficult struggle for human rights. It believes that dialogue & cooperation, rather than confrontation and double-standards, enhance the effectiveness of global human rights mechanisms.
The HRC consists of 47 Member States and is an intergovernmental body that reports directly to the UN General Assembly. Eritrea's candidature for re-election was endorsed by @_AfricanUnion's Executive Council at 38th ordinary session.
Out of the 47 members on the HRC, 13 are from Africa. Eritrea is 1 of 5 African countries, to be re-elected for 2nd terms.
The reelection, proved the credibility of Eritrea. I would like to thank those states who trusted us, with this huge responsibility. HRCelections2021
Congratulations, to the country and people!
