Irreechaa will be a national Holiday one day in Ethiopia. There is a lot of Ethiopian values to be gained from Irreechaa. The other key point is its economic value for the nation.
I heard today someone talking about Bushoftu (Debre Zeit) becoming a center of economic actitivities in the country after the Irreechaa Festival started to be celebrated at the Hor-Arsadi lake of the city in its modern form before few years.
Addis will not give up on the bonanza any time soon. Probably it was moved to Hor-Finfinne from Hor-Arsadi as its primary site for this reason.
BTW, Maareewoo seems to me to be related to ማርያም (St. Mari), could someone shed a light on this part?

Defend,
You asked legitimate Q. Thus I ethically respond my imagination. Your speculation seems to base on direct link of M...r to geez letter ማ.. ረ. But the term
Maareewoo has to do with the meaning it bears than form which is asking excuse from someone authorized to do this. But bible says salvation is only by Christ. Mary is mom (incarnation womb) of our lord Jesus Christ although she claimed righteousness. She was absolutely human being who had been given salvation. Therefore, the term
Maareewoo must have to related to seeking salvation from Jesus Christ. Also remember, father-in-law of Moses was priest. His daughter whom Moses married was referred to in Amharic bible as Ethiopian. No one else Ethiopian than Oromo was around there during times of Moses.
The implication is thus that Oromos were familiar to priesthood and used the term
Maareewoo to beg salvation from God.

AbebeB,
The term "maareewoo" is also related to "marina kristos", I think the two terms are not from different sources, if not one and the same.
In that case Marina Kristos might have to do with both St. Mari and Jusus Christ, I am not an expert on the issue at hand here.
In any case this festival is an occasion of celebrating the Almighty and thanking one's God for His blessings, the way it is delivered might differ but the message at the core is the same, if you either go to the Church, Mosque or Hora or Mount of different localities.
Especially this year Ethiopia has got many many reasons to thank their God.
I also say here Maareewoo, Maareewoo...

Defend,
I am not sure how Maareewoo is related to Marry if any but intuitively understand its relation to Christ for beginning salvation. Where and how to conduct is not a problem with me. God can graciously express Himself everywhere righteous people might praise Him. For example, book of Genesis tells us the God Holly Spirit was hovering on the surfaces of waters during creation. New Testament describe that God Holly Spirit is in us, believers in Jesus Christ. Also in the books of Exodus and Deutronomy, we learn that Mosese went to top of mountain, met with God the father and received commandments.
Therefore, Oromo's might mean Maareewoo to praise God the Almighty but I Do not see why they call up on Marry who have no scope of deity. But one last thing I wanna say that you may explain how you bring in Marry.
