Afghanistan: 20 years of war and lies
The western world rubs its eyes in amazement that it has been defeated by backward peasants. Leading media such as Bild recently asked the anxious question whether "our" soldiers died "in vain". Yes they are. As do tens of thousands of Afghans. For 20 years the warring states have sold their populations "progress reports" and painted in bright colors how the establishment of a democratic state in the Hindu Kush is being secured militarily. For 20 years, Afghan soldiers and police officers were also trained by their German colleagues. Reports by human rights organizations that many uniformed men join the Taliban after completing their training or act as criminal highwaymen have been brushed aside by the German government. In response to parliamentary inquiries, it was always assured that there was ongoing "professionalization" and "regular improvements" of the Afghan security forces.
But no sooner had their Western mentors flown away than they threw away their uniforms. There is literally no one in Afghanistan who is prepared to stand up for a regime whose defense was described by the occupiers for 20 years as having no alternative.
To strengthen the secular and progressive forces in Afghanistan, only a fraction of the funds that were available for the war effort were spent. And so there is no one who can oppose the deeply reactionary Taliban. The greatest hope now rests on the fact that the Taliban themselves are a bit more moderate and sensible than before - that alone shows the brilliant failure of the Western mission and the arrogance with which imperialism has presented itself as a savior.
The fact that the evacuation of the Afghan Bundeswehr helpers was delayed until it was too late for most of them is rightly called a scandal. But no less scandalous is the fact that Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) wanted to deport refugees to Kabul two weeks ago because it is supposedly safe there. No less scandalous is the fact that family members of refugees were made virtually impossible to enter Germany by being advised that they should apply for their visas in Islamabad or Tehran. An airlift was only considered when the Taliban were already in Kabul.
The war effort in Afghanistan never served to build a democracy. It was illegitimate from the start. The majority of the German population has always felt that way too - what is important is not only deep mistrust of any war propaganda, but also effective resistance against war policy.
