Ethiopia has de facto closed it’s United States Embassy in Washington DC.

Well placed senior diplomat at the Embassy told us that all 18 professional diplomats at Embassy , except the Ambassador, are recalled back to Ethiopia.

In addition to the recall of all professional diplomats, the same source indicated that the employment contracts of all local employees at the Embassy, 14 in total, are also terminated except that of a driver to the Ambassador & an office secretary.

The same internal source also indicated that almost all professional diplomats who were recalled back to Ethiopia will resign protesting the closure of the Embassy, and will seek political asylum in the United States.

In an interesting twist, about four Ethiopian regime paid ethnic Amhara intelligence officers, who were sent by the Ethiopian regime as immigrants to the United States within the last one year, are reportedly assigned to provide consular services as volunteers.

These sources have also confirmed earlier reports that the regime has also permanently closed the Ethiopian Consulates in California & Minnesota.

The Regime has also de facto closed Ethiopia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations Headquarters in New York, leaving only the Ambassador behind.

The Ethiopian Embassy in Canada is also reportedly de facto closed with only the Ambassador remaining behind.

Several senior Ethiopian diplomats we spoke to on this matter believes that the Ethiopian federal government has totally collapsed, and Ethiopia, officially, is a failed state.

Is this a cost reduction strategy or re-engineering process where inefficient staff slashed and the TPLF legacy embassy system being replaced by a new one or both. I don't think embassies need large swarm of staff while an Ambassador with few staff member can do the job - embassy is not an industry plant the requires large number of labor force. It is costly for Ethiopia tp pay in dollar and Euros to support large staff abroad. As we know TPLF used to send swarm of Tigres as diplomats so that they can suppress Ethiopians in the diaspora. Almost all of these Tigre diplomats were unqualified and none articulate. I remember the TPLF Ambassador Tsegay installed in Israel (may be he is 3rd grader) once gave interview that made the whole world laugh. It is much better not to have an Ambassador like that than opening an Embassy. An embassy staffed with people like Tsegay is much like without an ambassador.

The real reason for the closure is financial, as the woyane above said is the sign of the collapse of the regime. However, I do agree with you that all the so called diplomats are inefficient and appointed through nepotism and corruption and deserve to be fired. I would be happy if all of them apply for asylum and remain outside of Ethiopia rather than go back and eat the meager food we are producing there since they are useless.

But I support a large embassy stuff in a location like US and other wealthy countries that can lobby investors and draw tourists to Ethiopia. They must be effective and educated though, not ethnically appointed party memebers.
