Ethiopian Media Authority has suspended Addis Standard, an online media registered by the Authority on May 28, 2021. The temporary suspension followed complaints and alarming trends, in EMA’s monitoring findings.

We’ve learned the Media has been a platform to advance the terrorist group's agenda, to the extent of refusing to abide by the decisions of the HPR: legitimizing a terrorist group as a "Defence Force". This & other related misconducts will be subject to thorough investigation and further actions will be taken.

EMA would like to reaffirm that it is committed to press freedom; promoting and enabling professional and ethical journalism. As a regulatory body EMA would also like to emphasise, that freedom comes with responsibility and accountability.

We urge all media, to respect the rule of law and work responsibly.

This is dark time for the free press of Ethiopia!

Even though I don't agree with the suspension which is temporal I have to admit that Addis Standard lately has been a disappointment from the journalistic perspective. It has increasingly become one sided, bias and pure anti-government media. At times it feels like it was a TPLF outlet. It lost any sense of compass and gave up on even trying to be impartial and professional. The last few interviews of the chief editor Tsedale Lemma confirms how her personal bitter feelings against the government has showed up in the editorial decisions of Addis Standard.
