There are those who believe that signing off their sovereign rights to powerful nations is a sign of diplomatic prowess. For such individuals, how others perceive them is more important than self-respect, and they are willing to relinquish their sovereignty in exchange for others to validate their own existence. They don't know that self-respect is the best means of getting the respect of others, hence they become the laughing stock of the international community.

Foreign relations is not about self-respect and what not. That is all in the realm of culture. Foreign relations is about national interest and I don't think the ultimate national interest of Ethiopia is to be respected but to develop as fast as possible and pull as many people out of poverty. The foreign policy is just a tool to achieve the national interest of a country. There is no country in the world that developed without in some way cooperating with the west. China was a dirt poor country just few decades ago until it threw out the socialist economic ideology and opened up their huge labor force for western companies. Poorer countries like ours that tried the path of being anti western all ended up badly including Venezuela, Zimbabwe etc.
Self-respect and pride is part of our culture but we should not allow our culture to become the obstacle to achieve our national interest. Cultural values are good but they can be the wrong tool when it comes to foreign policy and achieving national interest, resulting in a disaster.

There has never been a national interest other than maintaining Abiy at the palace while EZEMA is riding him for a horse until they build an ethnicless utopia. To that end, anything goes! It is the same people who were ve·he·ment·ly opposing both GERD and China's engagement in Ethiopia just because they werent in the helm. Oh BTW, we just lost prized friends of kenya and djibouti; yet ezema's ቁራሌው politics is on behalf of the axis of evil is telling us that we are the gateway to africa and a model for all black people!
AU is in addis predominantly because the previous leaders' mutual goodwill and pioneering approaches and acts on the ground;it is not because of a messianic complexed pie in the sky gibberish and entitlement, and the attendant behaviors of demanding total submission locally as benchmarked by our only friend in the north.
We are a nation who is celebrate being under occupation and yet demanding others assistance as our rights.

Two New Yorkers enjoying a cold beer on a beautiful summer afternoon heard a news that came out of Ethiopia, which stated that, the Ethiopian government has demanded New Yorkers to leave the city immediately to allow the return of the notorious Italian mafia.
After having a good laugh over the news, the two friends inquired about the identity of the Ethiopian government official who issued the statement, to which they learned a person by the name of "temari", who holds a PhD degree in Diplomacy and International Relations, has made the egregious demands.
Once they confirmed temari's academic credentials, one of the friends said, "if we refuse the demands made by Diplomat temari, we Americans may be viewed as woefully ignorant of foreign affairs and lack diplomatic skills, not to mention, our international image will suffer."
And the other friend said, "I agree. Lets start packing and move to California before we feel the wrath of Diplomat temari."
The next day, 20 million New Yorkers left the city for fear of upsetting Diplomat temari, whose diplomatic skills and power of foreign relations has made him a force to be reckoned with.

You have completely missed my point. I’m not advising the government to say yes to all the demands of the west. No absolutely not. That’s is not what I’m saying. What I’m saying is that the government is not engaging the west and even our neighbors like Sudan with professional diplomacy. Our foreign minister has no clue what his job is and is sitting idle while our country is heading to a disaster because of lack of professional diplomacy. I’m urging the government to move its arse and do something before things get out of hand. Sitting idle and clueless is the last thing what we need currently. Forget the Derg style slogans.
I’ve never thought that foreign ministry could be such a critical post for a country just like having a defense force. The feeling of having no good foreign ministry is for me just like having no defense forces and your country is wide open for any attack. This is a big lesson. We should never ever let clueless amateurs run the foreign ministry again. That’s just suicidal!

Concretely, what do you want to say ? Sudan and Egypt do not want any kind of negotiations. They have a single demand : Ethiopia should sign a legally binding paper prepared by both Egypt and Sudan giving legality to the 1959 water sharing agreement between Egypt and Sudan. I fault the two New Yorkers for not inviting temari for talks over a beer (and perhaps some BBQ) aimed at easing the tensions between the two countries. Such diplomatic maneuver by the beer-drinking buddies could have prevented the mass exodus of New Yorkers, but they lost a once in a lifetime opportunity to do the right thing, and I'm sure they are now sorely disappointed by their failure to do diplomatic gymnastics when it mattered most.

I don't mean to digress from the topic here. But what has self-respect to do with pride?
I am asking because you seem to suggest that self-respect has a different meaning from how I understand it, which is more about humility and humbleness when you are just by yourself with a potential to do what is more than humble and you refrain from acting on it because of the respect that you have for your own self.
