The first Jewish migrants from Israel / Judea settled in Aksum. As Aksum became a Christian State around 336 AD, Aksumite Kings forced all citizens in their realm to be Christians. The Jewish Community in Tigray ( Aksum and surroundings) migrated to the mountains Ras Dejen area to avoid persecution. The Jewish Community in Aksum and later Ethiopia went underground as Judaism was not recognized as religion in Aksumite Ethiopia.
Tigrayans thus have the most ancient Jewish tradition incorporated in their Christian culture. Tigrayans have remained uncolonized and free.
