Anti-terrorism law: Another tool for the Genocide in Tigray

One of the fundamental principles of the constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) is sovereignty of the people. Article 8 sub-article 1 of the constitution stipulates that “all sovereign power resides in the nations, nationalities and peoples of Ethiopia”. It adds, in sub-article 3, “their sovereignty shall be expressed through their representatives elected in accordance with this constitution and through their direct democratic participation”.
The people and nation of Tigray are not represented in the House of Peoples’ Representatives, House of Federation and Council of Ministers since Oct 5, 2020, because the term of the elected government has expired. Hence, Tigray national political parties forum, don't believe the current government of Ethiopia has the legitimate mandate to draft and pass laws that have wide-ranging implications on member states.
Against the constitutional rights of the people and nation of Tigray, the self-appointed House of Peoples’ Representatives of the unelected government of Ethiopia, has continued to draft and pass laws that directly affect Tigraians without any regard to the fact that Tigrayans have no representation in the house. Keeping this irresponsible modus-operandi, the "House of Representatives" of the unelected government of Ethiopia has recently passed a new proclamation designating Tigray Peoples Liberation Front (TPLF) and Shene as terrorist groups.
The proclamation that designates TPLF as a terrorist organization is especially worrisome to the Forum of Nationalist Parties of Tigray. It is public knowledge by now that the Ethiopian government and its cronies have been intentionally working for several years on creating a wrong perception that the Tigrian people and TPLF are one and the same. We are extremely worried about the intention of the new proclamation which criminalizes anyone related by idea or action with the designated organizations. We believe that criminalizing TPLF as a terrorist organization will definitely affect adversely many innocent Tigrian nationals.
Tens of thousands of innocent Tigrians are currently languishing in overt and covert detention centres – essentially concentration camps - throughout the country without proper legal process. We believe one of the objectives of the new law is to make a case for those innocent civilians and legitimize the extrajudicial killings, massacres, war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Tigray that we have been calling to be investigated independently.
Apart from preparing a cover-up for the genocidal crimes the government and its allies have been committing, we strongly suspect the move by the government of Ethiopia is a sign that the perpetrators are ready to take their genocidal acts a step higher to a holocaust against the people of Tigray. In addition, we suspect that this law is intended to legalize the state sponsored looting of Tigrayan property. We, therefore, condemn in the strongest possible terms, the attempt by the Ethiopian government to use the law recklessly to exterminate the people of Tigray.
The Forum of Nationalist Parties of Tigray also believes that the move by the government of Ethiopia to label TPLF and Shene as terrorist organizations blocks peaceful ways resolving the problems in Ethiopia. This law will only repeat past mistakes, rather than solve any of the problems that the country is facing.
It is a clear confirmation of sheer hypocrisy that a government which publicly admitted the main source of terrorism in the country is "itself” and condemned the previous anti-terrorism law has opted to stick to such draconian laws to settle political differences, once again.
We believe the only solution to the multifaceted problem the country is facing is not coercion using various tactics including using the law. Instead we all for an immediate commencement of an all-inclusive political dialogue and respect the right to self determination of the people of nations.
Tigray will prevail!!
