No to #ORTNG Tweet Campaign and Here is Why:
The announcement for the tweet campaign was carelessly written. It says “Join our Twitter campaign today, May 5 2021 starting at 2pm DC/7pm London/8pm Berlin/9pm Nairobi/3:00 local time”—No coma between the date and year (May 5, 2021) and the time “9pm Nairobi/3:00 local time Oromia/Ethiopia” is wrong and confusing. Local time means a time of a location that shows the time zone within which the location is found and it doesn’t mean translation of the time in the local language. Don’t assume that your audience are ignorant or herds who simply follow what you said simply because you have a microphone to speak to them.
The proposed tweets are not well written. They are drafted by a layman who doesn’t have a political knowledge, who doesn’t understand the fact on the ground, and doesn’t have knowledge about legal frameworks in Ethiopia. Here are some points:
1. “OLF & OFC proposed a widely supported initiative to establish the Oromia Regional National Transitional Government”—The phrase “Oromia Regional National” is adulterated and wrong. There is no area in Ethiopia known by this name. The Ethiopian constitution says “the State of Oromia”.
2. “Oromo opposition parties have been barred from participating in the June 5th Ethiopian general elections”--‘’Barred” is not the right word and doesn’t reflect the fact why OLF & OFC will not participate in the election. OLF and OFC put a pre-condition for the participation in the election and since those pre-conditions were not met, they refused to participate.
I can go on and show you how each draft tweet is substandard in its content and form, but I think these examples suffice for now. You better focus on framing what the form, structure, objective, and time frame of the so-called “Transitional Government” look like and solicited opinion from residents of Oromia rather than rushing to solicit support from foreign countries for the action on which the residents of Oromia have no-clue.
