Chinese demand for donkey skin threatens farmers in East Africa

According to Chinese state-run media, the price of a full donkey skin in China has risen from $32 in 2000 to $435 in 2017. The rise in demand has been linked to the rise of the middle class in China, as well as an increase in consumer perception of the effectiveness of the medicine.

As the price of donkey skin has risen, thieves have begun targeting smallholder farmers in rural Kenya, often slaughtering the donkey in the bush. Some farmers are selling donkeys in anticipation of them being stolen.

“The loss emanating from theft or sale of donkeys render the owners jobless as they are robbed of the most important ‘tool’ necessary for income generation,” according to Brooke.

የዉጊያው እቅድ መግለጫ የተሰጠው እንፋራ በተባለ ቦታ ላይ ነበር። ፆረና ላይ ልዩ ዝግጅት ተደርጎ ነበር። 12,000 ያህል የትግራይ ሚሊሺያ፤ ከ5,000 በላይ አግላይ እንዲሁም ስንቅና ጥይት አቀባይ፤ በሺህዎች የሚቆጠሩ አህያና ፈረስም ለዚሁ ጦርነት ተሰልፈው ነበር። ለአንድ ሳምንት ያህል ከፍተኛ የጭንቀት ሙከራ ቢደረግም በዚያች ጠባብና ሙት መሬት የተሰለፈው ያ ሁሉ ንብረት፣ መሳሪያ፣ ሚሊሻና አግላይ፣ አህያና ፈረሶች ሳይቀር አንድ ላይ ረገፉ።


የ20ኛው ግዙፍ ሜካናይዝድ ሃይል እግሪ መከል ላይ አመድ ሆኖ ቀረ። ታንኰቹና ተሽከርካሪዎች በሙሉ አረሩ። ሻእቢያ በቀላሉ ከዛለንበሳ፣ ከአዲኳላና ከማይአይኒ አቅጣጫዎች በተጠመዱ መድፎች ሰራዊታችንን ተቀበለው። ይህ የጀግንነት ጉዳይ አይደለም። የኛ የጦር መሪዎች ወታደራዊ ቴክኒክ ከአለማወቅና ከብቃት ማነስ የመጣ ነበር። ሰራዊታችን እንዳለ ገብቶ ረገፈ። ከዚህ እልቂት የተረፉት ወደ ሁዋላ ሸሽተው ገርሁ ስርናይ እና እንትጮ፣ አድዋ ገቡ። ለአንድ ሳምንት የተሞከረው ዉጊያ በከፍተኛ ኪሳራ ከተደመደመ በሁዋላ የጦርነቱ ኣዛዥ የነበረው ጄኔራል ፃድቃን በወቅቱ ማዘዣ ጣብያ ከነበረችው እንፋራ ላይ ስብሰባ ጠራ።

ፃድቃን ስብሰባዉን ሊጀምር ሲል እንባው ቀድሞት ስቅስቅ ብሎ አለቀሰ። ሁሉም ተሰብሳቢ ተያይዞ መላቀስ ሆነ።

እንፋራ የለቅሶ ቦታ ሆነች።

ፃድቃን በመጨረሻ እንደምንም ራሱን ተቆጣጥሮ ከተረጋጋ በሁዋላ ተሰብሳቢውን ለማረጋጋት ሞከረ። እንዲህ ሲልም ተናገረ፤

"እስካሁን ብዙ ጦርነቶች መርቻለሁ። ብዙ ዉጊያዎችን ተዋግቼያለሁ። አይቻለሁ። ሰምቼያለሁ። እንዲህ አይነት መጥፎ ሁኔታ ግን ገጥሞኝ አያውቅም።"

If the news is authentic, I would say "well done".

Mind you, your dejach wube and ras alula looted our livestock, our sheep, our goats, our camels and besides, our donkeys were not spared in the first and second half of 19th century.
