Here's a rough translation of VOA's phone interview with Ato Muluberhan Haile in Tigray.


VOA: Are there Eritrean forces in Tigray?

Ato Muluberhan Haile: Yes there are Eritrean forces in the border areas actively involved in a variety of stabilization tasks, and they have managed to restore law and order in the North-Western regions of Tigray in a short period of time.

VOA: How did the Tigray people receive the Eritrean forces?

Ato Muluberhan Haile: We held a meeting to discuss the presence of Eritrean troops in the area and we expressed our concerns directly to them. Ato Muluberhan Haile: YES!!!

VOA: There are several western media news reports alleging Eritrean and Ethiopian forces committing rapes, looting and killings in Tigray. How do you see these allegations?

Ato Muluberhan Haile: Upon hearing the allegations, my team and I traveled to Mekelle and Shire to conduct a detailed fact-finding investigation to look into the allegations, and after interviewing many of the local people there, we found no evidence whatsoever to substantiate the allegations. Instead, we uncovered a vast TPLF propaganda network and disinformation campaign aimed at making false accusations against the Ethiopian and Eritrean forces in Tigray. We discovered that TPLF operatives wearing Ethiopian and Eritrean army uniforms have been committing rapes and looting to strengthen the false allegations made against the Ethiopian and Eritrean forces. In addition, the TPLF operatives were telling their victims that they are "Shaebia," however the victims knew too well the perpetrators to be local criminals working hand in glove with the TPLF. In fact, with the helps of the victims and the local people we have managed to apprehend many of the perpetrators and brought them to justice.

VOA: What information do you have on Axum? There are many western media reports about Eritrean forces committing atrocities against civilians at Axum. What's your take on that?

Ato Muluberhan Haile: Unfortunately, we haven't been to Axum to conduct an investigation yet, but like everyone else we have heard the rumors of civilians being killed there. But in the town of Shire, where there was a battle between Ethiopian forces and the retreating TPLF militia, we have witnessed damages to properties but our detailed investigation produced no evidence of civilian casualties there.
