Italy: More details emerge about NGOs accused of collaborating with human smugglers

The Italian judiciary has accused three NGOs that help to rescue refugees at the sea, of cooperating with people's smugglers from Libya. According to investigators, 21 employees of Save the Children, Médecins Sans Frontières, and Jugend Rettet have long communicated with smugglers and coordinated the departure and rescue of small overcrowded migrant boats.

According to the Italian police, cooperation in 12 rescue operations took place from spring to autumn 2017. A large part of the evidence was obtained by a police officer who infiltrated the workers of the Vos Hestia rescue ship of the Save the Children organization and filmed the joint action of smugglers and rescuers. Police also used wiretaps and seized material from confiscated computers and telephones, during the final raid. The final police report is 651-pages long and accuses 21 people of,

circumventing the rescue system set up by the Italian authorities

and of cooperating with human smugglers.

How did the NGOs, allegedly work with the smugglers? One early morning, for example, a group of Libyan smugglers arrived at the Vos Hestia and warned the ship's captain that a vessel full of refugees in need of rescue would soon appear. Prosecutors say nearly immediately a boat with 500 people on board emerged on the horizon, with one of the smugglers keeping the migrants calm by whipping them with a belt. The smugglers then organized the refugees' transfer to Vos Hestia, which transported them to the Italian shores with one smuggler on board. After three days, they sailed to the port of Reggio Calabria, and the Libyan smuggler soon disappeared without a trace, describes Le Temps on of the operations from June 2017.

Under maritime law, the crew of a ship that sees a vessel in distress must first inform the Maritime Rescue and Coordination Center (MRCC) in Rome, which may grant the permission to intervene. According to investigators, crews of the rescue ships received GPS coordinates of the boats with migrants in advance, sailed as close to them as possible, and only then did the vessels report to the MRCC. Because they were closest, the MRCC often ended up ordering them to rescue the refugees.

The Italian police accused 21 members of the ship's crews and coordinators of non-profit organizations from Italy, Germany, France, Belgium, the United Kingdom, and Spain. They face between four months and 20 years in prison.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has issued a statement, refuting that the organization would commit these offenses. According to MSF, the refugees' rescue fully complies with the maritime law, with a total of 81,000 people allegedly surviving the journey across the sea thanks to MSF.

The Syrian oil minister says the US and its allied Takfiri terrorist groups are plundering oil resources in the war-stricken Arab country, revealing that Washington controls 90 percent of crude reserves in oil-rich northeastern Syria.

Americans and their allies are targeting the Syrian oil wealth and its tankers just like pirates,

Syrian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Bassam Tomeh, told state-run and Arabic-language al-Ikhbariyah Syria television on Thursday evening.

He noted that the cost of direct and indirect damage to the Syrian oil sector stands at more than $92 billion.

What has happened all through Syria war has not happened in any country, in terms of preventing us from tapping our wealth resources and at the same time stopping basic commodities from reaching our country,

Tomeh said.

The United States and Israel are trying to prevent cargo ships and oil tankers from entering Syrian waters as part of the economic siege against the Arab country and its reconstruction process following the bloody civil war, a political analyst says.

The Syrian oil minister also cited a recent report published by the Wall Street Journal https://www.wsj.com/articles/israel-str ... 1615492789 that Israel has targeted at least a dozen vessels bound for Syria and mostly carrying Iranian oil.

The report published on March 11 said the Israeli regime, since late 2019, had been using naval weapons, including water mines, to strike vessels which were either Iranian, or carried Iranian cargo, as they navigated toward Syria in the Red Sea and in other areas of the region.

The oil sector has been targeted chiefly because it is the main source of income for the Syrian economy. We are looking forward to the exploitation of oil reserves in our territorial waters, but oil exploration contracts are pricey and time-consuming,

the Syrian oil minister pointed out.

We have a bright oil future in these waters, nevertheless the exploitation of oil reserves requires calm and stable logistical conditions,

Tomeh said.

The US military has stationed forces and equipment in northeastern Syria, with the Pentagon claiming that the US troop deployment is aimed at preventing the oilfields in the area from falling into the hands of the Daesh terrorists. Damascus, however, says the US troop deployment is meant to plunder Syria’s resources.

The US first confirmed its looting of Syrian oil during a Senate hearing exchange between South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and former US secretary of state Mike Pompeo in July last year.

During his testimony to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Pompeo confirmed for the first time that an American oil company would begin work in northeastern Syria, which is controlled by US-backed militants affiliated with the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

The Syrian government strongly condemned the agreement, saying that the deal was struck to plunder the country's natural resources, including oil and gas.

Back on February 20, Ghassan Halim Khalil, the governor of Syria’s northeastern province of Hasakah, told the Lebanese Arabic-language al-Akhbar daily newspaper that the SDF militants steal 140,000 barrels of crude oil on a daily basis from oil fields in the region.

He added that the Syrian oil is being plundered by the terrorists in various ways, all with the participation and support of the American forces deployed to the region.

Khalil stressed that precise intelligence collected and received showed that the US-backed militants use tanker trucks from Taramish area in the vicinity of Tigris and in al-Malikiyah town to smuggle the Syrian oil to neighboring Iraq.
