The main reason is most likely the angry response he got from Ethiopians after he verbally attacked the army. Just few days ago he announced he will be running for office in Addis Ababa but now he seems to grasp the level of anger Addis Ababans have to him and that he won't get a single vote in Addis and so has decided to save himself from the coming humiliation. Smart move!
