Sunday thoughts!
Tsedale Lemma
Several efforts to bring an end to the tragic & senseless war in #Tigray is facing stiff resistance from the Ethiopian Government & its backers who substitute pleas for cessation of hostilities to allow humanitarian access as attempts to bring back the TPLF.
A few things to say:
Decimating the TPLF as a political force has become the end game of this war for its Ethiopian/Eritrean players & enablers. But this is difficult to achieve in any foreseeable period of time because the war has outlived its original purpose, which was “enforcing the rule of law.”
By that, for the people of Tigray, this war has become a matter of surviving its continuing wrath & finding safety & freedom. First,it simply means the decision on whether the TPLF lives or dies is no longer Ethiopia’s or Eritrea’s call to make, but that of the people of Tigray.
Second, after all, a war, once it’s started (& the war in Tigray is one by every measure) takes the restraint of all its players to end it. There is no other way to ensure that than a mechanism in which cessation of hostilities are enforced on all its players, including the TPLF.
Third, substituting calls to end the war by attempts to bring back the TPLF & help it grab power in the center requires one to be sure if the TPLF wants anything to do with Ethiopian politics in the center anymore than it’s not wanted by the rest. The war has changed things!
Fourth, closing the door on attempts for cessation of hostilities by simply substituting it as attempts to bring the TPLF back deprives the people of Tigray, who have voted for it & have no other political representation at the moment, an agency to be key players to end the war.
Last, it should be clear to us all that respecting the territorial integrity & sovereignty of the Tigray national regional state as enshrined by the constitution & the federal order is the bare minimum any self respecting Tigrayan requires to start a meaningful political process.
As such, if Ethiopia ever wants the people of Tigray to envision the Tigrayan polity in its body politic & become a productive member of the federation, the choice on who they want as a party that can best represent their interest should be left for them & only them to make.
