That is the right decision, opportunistic but the right decision. Practically his party has nothing to run on.
Rather than being slaughtered by the rejection of the people whom he claimed to represent, it is better to talk about the lady who serves , Birtukan, the ruling party.
Eden and company too need something to talk to besides Tigray.
But I am afraid this probably only being talked about in ER. Ethiopians have forgotten, I think , a politician called Merrara still exists.

Merara Gudina , gave cover for the most ant-Ethiopian under his armpit, brought the "dikala politics "as a way to cleans those who happen to be a mixed heritage from Oromia, sat and looked on while a lady preaches that the Oromo women have to divorce their Neftena husband. Eden -- you can cry your eyeballs out , but he doesn't represent the majority of Oromos, he is a fringe and he will remain a fringe. The funny part is he participated in all weyane make-believe elections without fail, now he refused to participate because Ayatol can not ride him at will.

Yes they do Eden that is because they miss TPLF. They share the same politics with the TPLF guys than the one who is residing in Menilik palace right now.

Merera claimed that the political sphere is so narrow for his OFC to take part in the coming election.
When asked whether the political space during TPLF led elections were any better, he answered well "ያን ጊዜ የፖለቲካው ሜዳ ጠባብ ቢሆንም እኛም ቀጭን ነበርን። አሁን ግን ወፈር ብለናልና በጣም ጠበበን".
