Ethiopia launches construction of Chinese-contracted railway project to improve petroleum transportation

AWASH, Ethiopia, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Ethiopian government on Sunday launched the construction of a Chinese-contracted railway project that is expected to improve petroleum cargo services in the East African country.

Ethiopia, a landlocked country highly dependent on imported-petroleum products, laid the cornerstone of the railway project connecting the central Ethiopian market town of Awash and Djibouti, which is contracted by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).

Currently, the country has built the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway in the central-eastern part, and the Awash-Kombolcha-Woldia railway in the north, to facilitate petroleum cargo services. The new project is part of Ethiopia's aspiration to connect strategic railway lines.

Ethiopian State Minister of Transport Awol Wagais commended the much-awaited project as a necessary addition to the East African country's transport system.

Given existing long hard routes, a train tour from the Port of Djibouti to central Ethiopia usually costs three or four days, which "resulted in shortage of petroleum products in some parts of the country," Wagais said during the groundbreaking ceremony at Awash.

However, "the just-launched construction project, unlike its predecessor, is expected to create a vibrant and inclusive trading center," he said, adding "the desired petroleum products will arrive in their preferred place and place without any hurdles."

The rail line, scheduled to be completed within one year, could carry two oil tanker trains per day and achieve an annual delivery capacity of 1.3 million tons in the near future. In the long run, its transport capacity would rise to six trains per day.

Guo Chongfeng, executive director and general manager of CCECC Ethiopia, stressed the socioeconomic advantages the project will bring to the country.

"When completed, it will significantly improve the efficiency of oil transportation, enhance the operation capacity of the oil depot, and relieve the pressure of oil supply in Ethiopia," Guo said.

The project also includes the construction of Awash Station, which "will definitely become an important transportation hub and will also strengthen the connection between the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway and the Awash-Kombolcha-Woldia railway," the Chinese executive added.

Echoing Wagais' remarks, Tadesse Hailemariam, CEO of the Ethiopian Petroleum Supply Enterprise, said "I expect a lot from this project as this links a main rail with Awash Depot and again with the Horizon Depot in Djibouti so that the products could arrive inland."

"The hinterland is very much affected by road transport. So, this minimizes cost, time and even (ensures) the quality of the product, because the issue of adulteration and evaporation or whatever cases will be minimized," he told Xinhua.

Chinese companies have become major partners of Ethiopia in railway construction.

The Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway, as the first electrified transnational railway in East Africa, is contracted by two Chinese companies, China Railway Group and CCECC. It provides various freight services to locals, including transportation of perishable goods, vehicles, cereals and fertilizers. Enditem

Cornerstone laid for construction of rail connection, unloading facilities

Jan 31, 2021 by fanabc.

Addis Ababa, January 31, 2021 (FBC) – A cornerstone has been laid for the construction of a rail project connecting Awash-Wolidia-Kombolcha-Haragebya railway with the Addis Ababa-Djibouti line.

The project also include the construction of a line connecting the Awash depot with the main railway line, unloading facility and Awash-2 railway station, it was noted at a ground breaking ceremony.

The project will be built in the Afar regional state at Awash Sebat with a total cost of close to $55 million to be covered by the Government of Ethiopia.

The contract was awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), while China International Engineering Consulting Corporation will be a consulting firm.

The project is expected to take one year for completion.

It is to be recalled that the Ethiopian Railways Corporation and CCECC signed early this month a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the design and construction of the project.

During the signing ceremony, it was noted that the project will reduce traffic congestion along the Ethio-Djibouti road by creating an additional option to Ethiopia to use rail transport besides trucks to carry fuel from the port of Djibouti.

Ethiopia uses port of Djibouti as a gateway for its 95% of fuel import. The project will also help the country to smoothly transport fuel from Awash depot to the central parts of the country.

It will also reduce transportation cost, environmental pollution and help prevent fuel theft.

Awash Djibouti is already connected via Addis Djibouti rail track. The Addis Djibouti rail line cuts through Awash. What is this new project about, a separate additional line to exclusively transport petroleum?

It's all good project but now that Tigrayans are out of the picture and back to square one, there is a commonly held misconception among Oromo expansionists and Amhara extremists that they will dominate Ethiopian politics because they are the majority, this is an unfortunate misconception, because ethnic conflicts and secessionist civil wars arise from the dominance of one or more ethnic groups over others, Until all regional states have equal powers, rights and representation in the government, Ethiopia will never be a stable country.

Somali state has the largest land area in the federal democratic republic of Ethiopia, It also has large proven oil and gas reserves, tungsten, bauxite, platinum, ilmenite, copper, iron ore, etc, not to mention easy access to the sea, Somalis will simply walk away and declare independence.
