To start with I have personally nothing against dismantling Ethnic Federalism if that may bring a much sought-after peace and stability for the country and its people. But I am also for realistic wishes.

Change by its very definition is supposed to bring something forward (in a sense of progress) and not expected to be a mere play of doing the same thing again and again iteratively. It is not a mere exercise of “ዉሃ ቅዳ ዉሃ መልስ“.

In other words it is also not what Albert Einstein used to describe insanity saying “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result”.

There are many calls these days from the camp of the old guards for the dissolution of “Ethnic Federalism” and go back to the old way of doing business, I just guess here since the advocates of the call don’t mention what it is supposed to be after the dissolution may succeed.

Technically such actions are called “role-back” (or undo the changes) and go back to the old way. Without going to a much detail here this is not sustainable and also not prudent to keep undoing what has been already done to address some issues the old-way didn’t address.

If people are demanding about the dissolution of the Ethnic Federalism in Ethiopia, then the first thing they have to ask themselves is why are we where we are today in the first place?

Was it a mere business some people decide to execute just out of luxury or out of a true necessity?

If there are some necessities in introducing this arrangement then the first step we should try to answer is how to address those issues that made the current status a necessity? Do we have some concrete arrangements to take care of those necessities this time around?

In the absence of a clear answer to this question there is no doubt that the show is a mere ዉሃ ቅዳ ዉሃ መልስ exercise. And as such also not palatable and will going to backfire once again and we will lose one more time and seal our fate in staying in mere misery for the foreseeable future, while the rest of the world is not losing even a single second to shape its future in this highly competitive world order.
