ጃል,
even if we may find ourselves on different sides of the divide with regard to the current devastating war between the federal government of Ethiopia and the regional authority in the Tigray Region, with all its consequences on the brotherly people of Tigray and the rest of Ethiopia due to the intransigence of few, I still decided to share with you may dismay at the lack of responsibility of you, me and all the rest citizens of Ethiopia on the face of human suffering. If we are responsible, then we should stop this war ASAP and spare the lives of many innocent lives from perishing too early in the hands of their own countrymen and -women.
May I ask you for a once, why we need to kill each other and cause agony of war on many citizens of our own? What is the cause, even if there is a cause, for how long should we settle disagreement by means of solely war? Disagreement may happen everywhere on the world but not all people rush to raise their arms to kill each other to settle their disagreement, don’t you agree with me, my fellow citizen?
Aren’t we perhaps the most backward people on this planet to go that far and spill the blood of our own citizens just to nurture the will of few among us?
I am sure many people are not aware of what they are doing but still they are risking their precious lives simply because we told them that somebody is coming for them and eradicate them, ordered them to either raise their arms and fight back or they will perish without fighting back, they believed us.
You know, I know and the vast majority of the rest of Ethiopian people know that this is how we are making enemy within ourselves to ourselves and keep ourselves a backward society for eternity. We have been at war before 30 and 40 years but still failed to draw a lesson and spare ourselves from falling back into the same trap, when it strikes the next time.
Aura of power, of money, of fame, of you call it but that is just for the very few at the top, the rest is destined to toil the land or similar hard work to earn its living, nothing more, whether Tigray wins or lose.
If we were able to avoid that war before 30 and 40 years and be able to divert the resources it costed us towards our development, then perhaps Tigray alone could have been sufficient to accommodate all of us in Ethiopia and to pull ourselves from the yoke of poverty and backwardness, the major enemy of the people of Ethiopia, including that of Tigray.
If we can’t draw a lesson and fall back to the same trap again and again, then who is more backward than we are and don’t you think then also that we brought the wrath on ourselves and as such we deserved it?
But we didn’t start fighting each other only since 30 or 40 years ago, instead we have been doing the same thing over centuries and still we have high impulse for war and through that keep ourselves in darkness over many more centuries to come.
Tigray is Ethiopia and Ethiopia without Tigray is not complete and there is no reason why someone will come from other parts of Ethiopia and kill anybody from there.
We can have disagreement and live with our disagreement without anyone of us taking any advantage of the other, there is no an iota of justification that we need to kill each other, and there is no winner in a war that is waged between two brotherly people. If Tigray loses, then it is Ethiopia that has lost, if Ethiopia loses, then that is also Tigray which has lost. We share a common history and root and we are destined to have the same fate in the future.
We need to stop the suffering of our people (innocent people), those who are the true culprits, perceived or real, will never going to bear the brunt of the damage of the devastating war. Those are not the people who are daily coming to the tv-screen or other media platforms and call “war is a game for us” rather the destitute family with a young mother with a small baby on her back and another one or her side taking up a journey to the unknown distance, away from home to a foreign land or somewhere else far from her own home. This is tragic, it was tragic when we saw before just 5 years or so a caravan of hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees marching towards safety in the perilous journey to Europe, which held the world consciousness in breath, and how shouldn’t that be a similar tragedy when it happens against our own fellow citizens?
This is a tragedy happening one more time in front of our own eyes and we need to make something to curb it, my fellow citizen.
That baby you see on the back of its mother could be someone who could one day change the world if given the needed opportunity, but if it is let to get lost at that early age, then it is simply an opportunity nipped in the bud. If you care about your people, then give them the opportunity to get the chance to education and wellbeing so that they can change your own people and the rest of humanity, because knowledge doesn’t understand a boundary.
I care less if those politicians, who were just beating the drum of war for a long time may get harmed but I can’t bear, when I see the innocent citizens of my country have to suffer that much, so my fellow citizen, let me appeal to you and other actors of this war to end the suffering of our fellow citizens. We shouldn’t fail them.
We will only lose from what we have gained over the last number of years, be that is in Tigray or somewhere else in the country by continuing to wage this war.
Bring the war to an end!
