DRC pushes ahead with world’s largest hydropower project!!

The Inga hydropower dam is a grand project of 40,000MW to be constructed in six phases, which is an impressive capacity of more than double the Three Gorges in China (the world’s largest power station in terms of installed capacity (22,500 MW) since 2012). It has an equally grand price tag estimated at US$80B, which includes the transmission lines that will be needed to evacuate the power to the region.

Since the DRC’s current power demand is only at around 4,200MW, the strategy is to become a power exporter to the region.
This means DRC will export more than 35,800MW Electricity almost to half of African countries, i.e to more than 500 million people of Africa.

Inga hydropower project was in the plans since 1989. In fact, the initial plan was to build dam on Inga (Zaire river basin) and distribute the power across regions through a grid that connects Inga and Aswan. Egypt was pushing for the Inga-Aswan electric grid. There was even a highly ambitious thought to take the power as far as Europe across the Mediterranean. The World Bank had financed a feasibility study. But the Mammoth project was concluded to be not feasible mainly due to the risk involved on the safety of stretching a high tension electric grid along the swaths of the territories that the grid was intended to cover which lack infrastructure and was infested with rebels and civil wars.

From Egypt’s side, the project was attractive, not only because of the massive amount of power expected to be generated but also for its preemptive effect against any Ethiopia’s ambition to use the Nile waters to generate power for regional market. But their fear became a reality through GERD. The construction of any large dam especially on Abay has always been a nightmare for Egypt.
