Q & A

On Sep 26, 2020

Born in 1988, Tedros Berhane is a young Eritrean actor, whose name has been shining among Eritrean fans. Working his way up, Tedros has acted in many Eritrean feature films, plays and television serials. Here is a translation of an interview he conducted with Menesey, a quarterly magazine in Tigrigna, about his journey as an actor.

Jumping into Acting ….. by accident?

As a child, I used to be interested in playing and working with technical paraphernalia. Before I got into art, which happened accidently, I was working as a carpenter. But, I always kept up with most movies or artistic productions coming out, when I was young. Still, I never thought that I would become an actor. In fact, I was rather into music.

In 2008, I came across a friend of mine who was in the acting business with a script to study. I asked her about the script, and how it worked. She explained to me the requirements and the way it worked, which I eventually thought was a piece of cake. I felt like I could do that and I wanted to give acting a try, for the first time. Through her I met an author and director, Tsegai (aka Adi Tilyan), and we started to work on some projects that didn’t go well. Afterwards, I was able to get in touch with artists who were experienced in the art industry, and many job opportunities were opened up for me. I found the art industry to be vast and a bit challenging, especially since I got into it without any training. Working with the artists and supporting one another, made it easier.

First introduction to the public…..it’s all hectic afterwards!

My first appearance on the stage was in 2008, at the 3rd National Youth Festival in Sawa. It was the 30th anniversary of the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students and the graduation of the 21st round of students at Sawa, which made it more momentous. I acted in three plays written and directed by famous artists such as Fitsum Teklu, Daniel Mizura and others. The plays were televised and broadcast, by radio. That got me recognition, by the public. Later on, I started working as a lead actor in many plays. In 2009, I had the privilege of acting as the lead actor in movies such as Merge, Zeragito, kewta, Nugus Chaka, Silemtay, and others. Working in those movies, gave me experiences as an artist.

It is true, that every movie has its own challenges. For instance, we encountered many challenges in shooting Nugus Chacka (king of the jungle). Our number one caution was, to be able to pass on the right message. We had to be cautious about the clarity of our language, as we had to avoid passing on the wrong idea and message. We didn’t want to only represent a specific area or region, which is why we tried hard to use various Tigrigna dialects. We also were running out of food, while shooting. We had actors who got sick, because of that. But at the end of the day, with the help of the director, we were able to produce the film which was one of the most successful movies.

I stopped acting, for quite some time. It was in 2012 that I fully got back to acting and I have worked on numerous movies since then: Leyla, Kidus, Bahgi, Afediyu …. Afedeyu was initially my idea. I have always had the idea in my head, for a long time. I finally gave it to Dr. Sweet, who has always encouraged me to write my own materials. Dr. Sweet, broadened the idea and wrote the script. We then decided to make the movie in English and I was the lead actor in the movie. Of course, there was the language challenge I had to go through but we tried it. This movie hasn’t made it to the public, yet.

I have also acted in two of television serial movies, Wey Seb Deqey and Nitab Zkri. Working on Nitab Zikri, I was shocked to see the size of the scripts; it was a whole bag. It is a movie about the heroism of our forefathers, our history and to finally be able to go through all the challenges and deliver the message to the public is just amazing.

Being an actor….and does it always pay the bill?

Being an actor, isn’t as easy as it looks. There are many requirements, that need to be met. Most of all, one has to love the profession and be committed. An actor needs to be hard working and represent well, the character they are given.

Eritrean Movies and artists, Tedros admires!

I admire, all Eritrean actors. I can name many — Ftsum Teklu, Aman Badsha, Simon Men Ketebo and many others are some of the great artists. But I have special regard, for Samsom Tekie. Movies I would never get tired of watching are: Barud 77, Eta Ade, Tsinat, Afro, Azmarino and Telime Diye.

A Tip, to young Eritreans.

Art is a profession that has a great value, if and only if you work hard on it. I hope there comes a time, when we can achieve greatly in the art industry. I would like to remind the youth, to have a goal and keep working hard.

On Sept 6-7, 1993 Pres Isaias Afwerki led an Eritrean delegation to the IGAAD conference held in Addis Ababa. Eritrea was accepted as a member of the organizationz during this meeting. The participating countries were Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan & Uganda.

On 27 April 2007, Eritrea notified IGAD of its decision to
temporarily suspend its membership
and
freeze its activities
in IGAD stating that
it’s not responsible to stay in that organization when decisions are being made that are not legally or morally acceptable.
IGAD did not reply, to Eritrea's Letter. However, on June 14, 2008 at the 12th summit of IGAD's Leaders, the Leaders endorsed a recommendation for the establishment of a task force to convince Eritrea to reconsider her decision to suspend membership in IGAD.

Accordingly, on 14–15 Aug 2008 a delegation led by Foreign Ministers of Kenyan, Moses Wetangula, South Sudan's Deng Alor & IGAD Exe Sec Mahboub Maalim visited Eritrea & earnestly requested Eritrea to reconsider her suspension of membership from IGAD.

Pres Isaias informed IGAD's delegation that Eritrea suspended her membership because IGAD failed in Somalia's crisis, Sudan, Eritrea-Ethiopia / Eritrea-Djibouti disputes & IGAD’s failure to act when 3 Eritreans were kidnapped on the streets of Nairobi by the Kenyan authorities.

Eritrea then appointed Minister Arefaine Berhe, as the focal person to deal with IGAD matters in Eritrea & Pres Isaias promised that Eritrea would be committed to engage with IGAD.

On July 25, 2011, the gov of Eritrea informed IGAD that it'd reactivate its membership of stating:
Eritrea's determination to make its contribution, in cooperation with members, to the achievement of peace and development as well as the revitalization of IGAD.
On July 27, 2011 IGAD Exe Sec Eng Maalim expressed his happiness with Eritrea's bold decision to rejoin IGAD stating the move as historic & invited Eritrea to send 3 reps, to attend a 23–24 Aug 2011 meeting on the implementation of hydrological cycle observing system project.

On 24 Aug 2011, Eritrea's delegate who sat to attend the 40th extraordinary session of the Council of Ministers was told that he would not be allowed to sit at the meeting & was escorted out by the hotel’s security personnel. IGAD stated, Eritrea's membership was pending approval.

The story of the simple innovative and cost-effective handwashing stand

Eritrea promotes workplace safety, hygiene and safe re-opening of Government offices and businesses during COVID-19

The National Confederation of Eritrean Workers (NCEW) has introduced simple and effective handwashing stands. This ensures workplace safety and wellbeing whilst also promoting local innovation and job creation in Eritrea. This initiative, of the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers (NCEW) in partnership with UNDP Eritrea, aims to provide support in the re-opening of different categories of businesses, ensuring workplace safety and well-being with the provision of adequate hand sanitation in line with the prevention of the spreading of the COVID19 and supporting livelihoods.

As the world and the Government of Eritrea gradually move towards easing the lockdown measures and preparing offices and businesses to reopen, UNDP in Eritrea is working closely with the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers (NCEW), to put in place workplace safety measures that will protect lives and build back confidence for smooth takeoff of businesses.

The ideation, design and manufacture of the handwashing stand has revitalized local innovation and creativity bolstering the country’s philosophy of “self-reliance”, with much expertise drawn from the local skilled workforce. The innovative, cost efficient and effective handwashing tanker stand operates exclusively on the pedal, in order to exclude the use of hands while using the handwashing stand thus reducing contamination.

This initiative also ensures the promotion of job creation and revitalizing of livelihoods empowerment, with 195 workers participating in the whole process from designing, building, and timely delivery of stands along with detergents and face masks. Strong commitment and flexibility were pursued by all those who were involved in the building of the stands as the work involved the fabrication of molds and modification of existing apparatus.

Eritrea remains one of the least affected countries in terms of infection rate and with zero COVID-19 related deaths thus far. It is remarkable to note that the recovery rate of coronavirus patients in Eritrea is 90% (330 out of 369 total positive cases have recovered to date). Since the early detection of the first coronavirus case in China in December 2019, and the subsequent outbreak in many countries, the Government of the State of Eritrea (GoSE) has been embarking on proactive progressive approaches as part of its overall prevention, preparedness and response strategy against COVID-19. An immediate response and preparedness strategy that among others includes precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the pandemic was strictly implemented by the Government of Eritrea.

As a contribution to the work already in place, UNDP in Eritrea renewed its Committment and solidarity to the people and Government of Eritrea and responded swiftly by extending both financial and technical support to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

The UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. James Wakiaga, underlines:

…..The manufacture of simple handwashing and sanitizing machine is one of initiatives developed in close coordination with the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers (NCEW) aimed to promote workplace safety, build trust and facilitate the re-opening of government offices, the private sector and different categories of businesses in line with the prevention of the spreading of the COVID19 and supporting livelihoods. This intervention is not only about promoting workplace safety, hygiene and sanitation but it has also stimulated local level creativity and innovation as well as livelihood empowerment and job creation

During the first phase of this initiative, NCEW placed 250 handwashing stands in key hospitals and communities as well as in public places including Schools, Administrations and Civil organizations. Approximately 195 jobs were created with the revamping of a local manufacturing outlet that designed and produced the handwash stands hence rebuilding livelihoods.

UNDP Eritrea will continue to support the efforts by the Government of State of Eritrea (GoSE) towards the COVID-19 response and recovery with the critical aim of safeguarding progress on the achievement of the SDGs to leave no one behind.

Isak, another option that pleases Barça

https://www.mundodeportivo.com/futbol/f ... barca.html

The Swede (21 years old) already liked by the technical secretariat and now he also arouses the interest of Henrik Larsson

Alexander Isak (21 years old) is a young striker for Real Sociedad who has long drawn the attention of FC Barcelona, among other great clubs that have noticed his potential. Possessing a privileged physique thanks to his 1.90 m., the Swede stands out for his speed but also for his technique with the ball at his feet, something that draws attention given his size.

At Barça, they are very attentive to their situation. They already were before Ronald Koeman arrived and now that the Dutch coach is there there is even more interest. Among other things because there is a member of his staff who was a forward in and who knows Isak and his virtues, very well. It's: Henrik Larsson .

The Swede, who was a forward in Barça & who won the love of the Camp Nou fans after being decisive in the Champions League final 2006 League, follows Isak closely. He likes his speed, his technique and his scoring ability. Last season he participated in 44 games (37 in the League and 7 in the Copa del Rey), in which he scored 16 goals (9 in the League and 7 in the Cup) and gave three assists.

Isak, scoring against Real Madrid in the Cup

Facing his signing is complicated not because of his record, which is not very high in the Barça parameters, but because his clause is €70 million and Real does not make discounts. Perhaps a player might interest you, but it would not lower histhat much. In the winter market, Barça already thought about Isak but a misunderstanding with his agents frustrated the operation.
