Letter: Join Amnesty International vigil in Worcester

By Barry Kinghorn

Sunday, August 30, is the International Day of the Disappeared

SIR – Sunday, August 30, is the International Day of the Disappeared. Worcester Amnesty International group will be holding a vigil outside the cathedral from 11am-noon to draw attention to the fate of individuals imprisoned at places and under poor conditions unknown to their relatives and legal representatives.

Many people will remember the Desaparecidos of Argentina and Chile in the 1970s and 1980s but still, today, many people are arrested, often tortured, and illegally detained in secret locations.

Hundreds of thousands of people have vanished during conflicts or periods of repression in at least 85 countries around the world.

One such person is Aster Fissehatsion, a politician in Eritrea who has been missing since September 18 2001. For her family and friends, it is a slow anguish, not knowing where she is, how her health is, or even if she is still alive.

You are welcome to join us on Sunday.
