I haven't seen the first photo before now. However, I still remember that night. No, I wasn't celebrating. I was on my way to become another dropout, no pun intended. I was on my way to run away from the city that our northern rebels were conquering. At that time, I didn't even know that your rebels were leading the way to take over the palace. Only in recent times did I read about it on this forum.
That night, I was with a few colleagues on AAU's main campus, sitting on the backside of one of the dormitory buildings and seeing colored stray bullets fired into the air in the middle of the city. We couldn't tell and I still do not know what those stray bullets were suggesting. It only appeared to go closer to the palace. As we continued to watch, all of a sudden, we saw a man walk out of a modest building behind the campus, across the road that goes toward Ghiorghis. After coming out from the house to its lighted verenda, he crossed his hands at his waist and then stretched them sideways. We tried to intepret that he was saying it was over. He was saying it just under our nose.
I don't remember if it was the same night that we heard VOA's interview of Obbo Lencho Leta about the meeting. We heard the next day that the palace fell, sooner than we expected. The will to drop out, which started before then, didn't stop there or then. Only the signing of the Charter later in the summer changed the way to a peaceful struggle.
