New study on Tegaru migrants to the gulf finds many unaware of dangers

Only 30 per cent of Tegaru migrants seeking to find work in Saudi Arabia are aware that Yemen – the one country they must cross —is in its sixth year of conflict, while less than 50 per cent know of the dangers of boats capsizing at sea.

This according to a new study – ‘The Desire to Thrive Regardless of Risk’ – by the International Organization for Migration (IOM)’s Regional Data Hub which is largely funded by the EU-IOM Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration in the Horn of Africa.

The research found that many of the young Tegaru migrants on the Eastern Route to the Middle East remained unaware of the risks of the journey. These include the high likelihood of experiencing hunger, dehydration, or contracting waterborne and gastrointestinal diseases in transit, along with the possibility of being abused.

The study is based on interviews with over 2,000 young Tegaru youth in Obock, Djibouti, trying to reach Saudi Arabia.

Since 2017 at least 400,000 Tegaru have crossed to the Arab Peninsula, where IOM maintains an outreach programme advising young migrants of the perils ahead. Last year over 120,000 migrants were returned from Saudi Arabia to Tigray.

According to a UN study, Tegaru make up only 4% of the Ethiopian population, yet 90% of all migrants originating from Ethiopia are Tegaru. This strong migration culture deserves a UN expert study to find out its root causes. War and migration must stop becoming Tigray's only two cultures.

The stigma associated with being the number one refugee producing region in Ethiopia has a significant psychological impact on us Tegaru who were forced to embrace migration as "Tigray's culture" by the Adwa Weyane.

In the past, our Tegaru parents and grandparents migrated to Eritrea in search of seasonal work in the agriculture sector, however the risk of migrating to Eritrea was minimal compared to our current mass migration to Yemen. I hope that once we remove the TPLF cancer from Tigray, our Tegaru youth can start migrating to Eritrea for better job opportunities and living standard.

Where is Awusha when you need him. 400,000 since 2017 is really exodus! But it is not just the migration, it where they are migrating that is odd!

In the Arab world, the Arabs no longer call us Tegaru anymore. Now they call us "Coronavirus carriers." That is our new name and it hurts my Tigraway feelings.
