TPLF as a political force will exist if it reshapes itself. It needs a total makeover.
TPLF was born , its founders claimed , because they found an enemy in the Amharas. First, the enemies were every Amharas dead or alive, When the Berket Simon group joined TPLF as an ally, the great majority of Amharas written off the enemies list. Now , it was the Amharas ruling class. But that class did not exist. Even if it existed in a small number, it was buried for good after land to the tiller proclamation became law. But ask any TPLF politician now and they still see an enemy in the “ temketegnas.”
Yes, Ethiopia has enemies , but they are not the Amharas. Ethiopians need economic mobility. Ethiopians need political freedom. Ethiopians need higher education which produces energetic young people to the real world. Ethiopia needs to value science and strives to benefit from it. Ethiopia needs to shade off old culture that restrains progress. The Amharas are not against those worthy goals. I do not see an enemy in the Amharas, so should the TPLFites.
With the TPLF politics remain intact , the party will wither away is a given. It will go through a slow , agonizing death. But there still is time ; time to upgrade the TPLF politics to the century we are in. But do the TPLF old guards believe now they have barked at the wrong tree all along ? Well, I do not bet on that.
