Ethiopia jails former minister for corruption

ADDIS ABABA, May 8 (Reuters) - An Ethiopian court on Friday convicted a former cabinet minister on corruption charges and sentenced him to six years in prison.

The conviction comes amid a push by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to crack down on corruption in the public sector. Several former senior government officials and executives of state-owned enterprises have already been arrested and jailed.

Bereket Simon was minister of communication from 1995 to 2012 under then prime minister Meles Zenawi and was widely considered to be his right-hand man.

Bereket co-founded the Amhara region’s public investment fund, TIRET Corporation, which he led until 2017. TIRET owns companies in the brewing, construction, transport and logistics sectors.

He was arrested last year on suspicion of mismanagement of public funds while he was heading the fund.

Bereket was found guilty on two counts, of corruption and mismanagement of the institution, court spokesman Tazebachew Tassie said.

The court in Bahir Dar, the capital of Amhara, also convicted Tadesse Kassa, a former TIRET board member, on the same charges.

Lawyers for Bereket and Tadesse could not immediately be reached for comment.

Bereket Simon spent a big chunk of his time organizing groups to undermine Eritrean leadership and sovereignty, be it through pal-talk or other means. He was never working for Ethiopia, but the destruction of Eritrea.

For his crimes, 6 years is too little but we Eritreans are a forgiving lot, so I wish him nothing but to finish his time in jail, repent his crimes against his ancestral land and people and rejoin his family. Perhaps, return the millions of dollars he looted too!

This is where Tegaru need to focus on ... this is where the criminal TPLF should invest its looted billions, not on destabilizing the region.

27 years in power for NOTHING! If they can't fix Tigray while they are in power and in control of the Ethiopian wealth, they can't fix it now when they are thrown out like a worthless rag.

So, what is the way out of this curse? Simple. Coming back to their senses and accept the reality on the ground. Eritrea is their only safety valve, to breath fresh air of development and prosperity. Antagonizing Eritrea, will only prolong their suffering. Accept the terms of the peace deal without ifs and buts and join the prosperity train NOW than later.

If you Tegaru think there is another road to achieving your fantasy, you are mistaken. You have tried everything and failed. At the end of the day, you only succeeded in digging your own grave .... deeper.

You might have looted & deported Eritreans out of Ethiopia, but we've already started with our comeback. You can never put an Eritrean down!
