About 95% of the population speaks Tigrigna and are Orthodox Christians.
Raya has been an area with resistance to Haile Selassie government.
Raya supported Mengistu Haile Marriam and fought against Woyane or TPLF fiercely. As TPLF gained momentum, most youth welcomed TPLF with resistance. Rayans identify themselves as proud Tigrayan- Ethiopians and do cautiously support TPLF now.

Raya has nothing to do with Tigray the earliest tigrayan invasion and conquests began in the period of Atse Yohannes who hunted out all the other tribes in Raya and incorporated it into Tigray.
Raya is everything south of Alamata and north of Woldia it’s purely Amhara region and has a very small Tigray population, every thing north of Alamata is raya wannabe like endertan wajirats
