Ethiopia - The First Christian Nation?

Post by bp-editing1 » 02 May 2020, 01:40

For centuries, historians have widely accepted the argument that Armenia was the first Christian nation. This important claim has become a source of national pride for Armenians and has remained virtually undisputed for centuries -- until now.

Armenians will likely be up at arms when they learn that a new book -- “Abyssinian Christianity: The First Christian Nation?” -- is challenging their claim, presenting the possibility that Abyssinia (modern-day Ethiopia and Eritrea) was the first Christian nation.

To be sure, the book doesn't conclusively assert that Ethiopia was the first nation to adopt Christianity as its state religion. However, it will surely challenge the confidence of modern church historians with groundbreaking evidence.

Eritrea should not be mentioned in the book. Eritrea has not contributed anything to spiritual life in Ethiopia. It is mainly Ethiopians who really accepted Christianity as their religion. Ethiopians accepted Judaism a millennium ago before the birth of Christ.

In general we should decouple Eritrea from Ethiopia. Ethiopia has it'sown history. The victory of Adwa for instance entirely Ethiopian. The victory over Ottoman Turkey is also Ethiopian people's history. Ethiopia is historically a power, a large country, an empire. Thus describing history of Ethiopia by associating it with Eritrea is an insult to Ethiopians. Eritrea has no history except that of slavery and colonialism. There was no country called Eritrea before 1890, the year Italy controlled the area with Ethiopia's acquiescence, which seems to have been a big mistake.
